The San Giustino Festival is the patronal celebration of Chieti, the capital of the province of the same name in Abruzzo. Every year on May 11th, the local community gathers around the figure of its first bishop and patron saint in a celebration that intertwines faith, history, and civic identity. It is one of the most cherished events of the Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto and a moment that truly captures the soul of this ancient city.

Who was San Giustino

According to tradition, San Giustino was the evangelizer of Chieti and its first bishop. While historical sources are scarce and partly legendary, his cult has been documented in the city since the early Middle Ages: as early as the 11th century, the Cathedral of Chieti, located at the highest point of the hill where the historic center stands, was named after him. The Saint's relics are kept in an urn in the Cathedral's crypt, a destination for devotion and pilgrimage. Ancient stories are linked to his figure, such as the famous "holy arm" invoked by the faithful, and the memory of the 15th-century bust created by Nicola da Guardiagrele.

The religious program

The festival is preceded by a three-day preparation period (triduo) celebrated in the Cathedral in the days leading up to the feast. On the eve, the Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto presides over the first Vespers and the Holy Mass concelebrated by the city's priests, followed by the solemn procession with the bust of the Saint through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the clergy, authorities, and a crowd of faithful. On the day of San Giustino, May 11th, Holy Masses are celebrated, including the solemn one presided over by the Archbishop together with the diocesan priests.

The secular festival: Palio and entertainment

Alongside the religious celebrations, Chieti enjoys days of popular festivities. Among the most anticipated events is the Palio de lu ricchiap, organized by the Scopri Teate association, featuring a grand historical pageant in period costumes in the historic center, accompanied by flag-wavers and competitions between the districts. The festival traditionally concludes with a free concert in Piazza San Giustino, the monumental heart of the city, which has hosted major names in Italian music over the years to great public acclaim.
