A festival dedicated to the San Giuseppe pastry

The San Giuseppe Sfincia Festival is one of the most beloved culinary events in Bagheria, located in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. It takes place annually along Corso Umberto I, in the heart of the so-called "City of Villas," in the days leading up to the feast of the patron saint, traditionally held on March 19th. The event is organized by the Confraternita Patriarca "San Giuseppe" of Bagheria, with the patronage of the Municipality of Bagheria and the collaboration of the Centro Studi Aurora.

The sfincia, queen of the day

The absolute star is the sfincia, a fried pastry typical of Sicilian confectionery linked to the cult of Saint Joseph and registered as a Traditional Agri-food Product (P.A.T.). It is a soft fritter filled with ricotta cream and embellished with chocolate chips, pistachio crumbles, and candied cherry and orange peel. Tradition traces the recipe back to the reinterpretations by the nuns of the Monastery of the Stimmate di San Francesco in Palermo; in Bagheria, pastry chefs have turned it into an icon of local confectionery culture.

Tastings, bars, and festive atmosphere

During the festival, numerous bars and pastry shops in the city set up their stalls along the Corso to offer their sfince: among the protagonists of recent editions are historic establishments beloved by the locals. A tasting ticket allows visitors to sample the pastry, while folk music groups enliven the promenade and, in some editions, live cooking demonstrations are held to show the public how the sfincia is prepared.

Between devotion and tradition

The festival is part of the celebrations in honor of Saint Joseph, patron saint of Bagheria since 1658, preceded by the novena and the blessing of the bread. It is considered one of the first events of the pre-spring season and combines religious, popular, and gastronomic dimensions, attracting residents and visitors from neighboring towns in the province of Palermo.
