The rural feast of the Patriarch in the Villaggio Vittorio Veneto of Milena
The San Giuseppe della Campagna Festival is one of the most deeply felt traditions in Milena, a small town in the Province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of Sicily. Unlike the urban feast on March 19th, dedicated to the Patriarch with the traditional tavulati di li vecchiariddi, this celebration takes place in late spring in the Milena countryside, at the Villaggio Vittorio Veneto, in the Robba Patini area.
The event is traditionally set for the second Sunday of May, when the countryside is in full bloom. The festive day brings to life an entire community that revolves around the small church dedicated to the Saint, built out of devotion at a crossroads in the district.
The festival naturally combines religious and popular aspects. The day begins early in the morning with the firing of firecrackers, followed by Holy Mass and the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Joseph through the streets of the village. In the afternoon, the festive dimension takes over with music, entertainment, and traditional peasant games.
The most anticipated moment is the 'ntinna, the greasy pole: a pole about eight meters long treated with soap that competitors try to climb to grab the prize at the top, using only the pastura, a rope braided with the longest hairs from the manes and tails of horses. For children, there are popular games like li baccareḍḍi, the pot-breaking game, and other pastimes from Sicilian rural culture.
The festival features a brass band and entertainment with live groups and ensembles. The afternoon culminates with the community spaghetti feast, a convivial moment that brings together residents and visitors, and with the fireworks that bid farewell to the evening. The festival also preserves the memory of the traditional fera di San Giseppi, a country fair linked to the cult of the Saint.
The San Giuseppe della Campagna Festival is a living testimony to the intangible heritage of Milena and inland Sicily: an event that binds faith, peasant identity, play, and sociality into a single day of community. An authentic opportunity to discover the Nisseno village and its rural roots.
The 2026 San Giuseppe della Campagna Festival was held on Sunday, May 10, in Milena. The morning opened with a parade by the Scalia tammurinara group and the feetwalking event, a 4 km sporting route that ended in front of the church, followed by Holy Mass presided over by Father Gianluca Tirrito.
In the afternoon, the procession of the statue of Saint Joseph took place, along with traditional games for children like li baccareḍḍi and the pot-breaking game, and the 'ntinna competition, won by Mattia Tona. The festival was enlivened by the Verdi Brass Band of Milena and the Ash Live Band. The day concluded with fireworks and the customary community spaghetti feast.
The festival is held in the Villaggio Vittorio Veneto of Milena (CL), in the Robba Patini district, at the church of San Giuseppe della Campagna, south of the town center.
By car: Milena can be reached from the SS640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento road, taking the exit towards the Nisseno hinterland. The nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi. The reference train station is in Caltanissetta.
Admission to the celebrations and games is free. Comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking on country paths are recommended. The spaghetti feast and convivial moments are open to the community.
