The March 19th fires in the heart of the Monti Dauni
Every March 19th, on the feast of Saint Joseph, the small village of Castelluccio Valmaggiore, in the province of Foggia, glows with its traditional bonfires. Overlooking the Celone Valley, in the heart of the Monti Dauni, the town renews one of the most iconic celebrations of northern Puglia: the lighting of massive ritual fires across the town, around which the entire community gathers in a spirit of faith, celebration, and togetherness.
The tradition of the bonfires dates back to around 1600, when Castelluccio Valmaggiore was a hub for skilled craftsmen, particularly carpenters. It was this community of artisans who chose Saint Joseph—the carpenter par excellence and patron saint of woodworkers—as their protector. For over five centuries, these fires have served a propitiatory purpose: burning away the old and the negativity of winter to invoke a bountiful harvest and the saint's protection over the community. Fire, as a symbol of purification, remains the focal point of the entire festival.
In the days leading up to the festival, volunteers and civil service youth gather wood and build the pyres. Recent editions have seen ten bonfires lit across various points in the village, transforming the entire historic center into a vibrant meeting space. At dusk, following the blessing, the fires are lit one by one; each gathering spot becomes a place of conviviality, animated by music, tastings, and the aroma of meat roasting over the embers.
Beyond its popular appeal, the festival maintains a strong religious character. The parish of San Giovanni Battista oversees the liturgical celebration and the procession of the saint through the village streets, accompanied by the local brass band. Among the most cherished gestures is the distribution of traditional blessed bread rolls (panellini) to residents over seventy, a sign of the community's care for its most vulnerable members. Food and wine trails wind through the historic center, featuring various spots dedicated to local cuisine, while the evening concludes with a fireworks display.
The Municipality of Castelluccio Valmaggiore is one of the small towns in the Monti Dauni, the mountainous and hilly region that borders the western part of the province of Foggia, in Puglia. Surrounded by forests and overlooking the Celone River valley, the town preserves a historical and natural heritage linked to the Museo della Valle del Celone and traces of its medieval past. The feast of Saint Joseph, promoted by the Fraternita di Misericordia with the support of the Municipality, represents the moment when this Monti Dauni community most intensely reconnects with its own identity.
The 2026 edition took place around March 19th with record participation: ten bonfires lit in the village, the saint's procession, the distribution of blessed bread to those over 70, food and wine trails, and final fireworks. The event, organized by the Fraternita di Misericordia with the parish of San Giovanni Battista and the support of the Municipality, confirmed the vitality of a tradition that continues to engage entire generations.
The 2026 edition of the San Giuseppe bonfires transformed the entire center of Castelluccio Valmaggiore into a large community space. Ten bonfires were set up and lit in various parts of the town, around which residents and visitors gathered amidst music, conviviality, and the scent of meat roasting over the embers.
The festival combined religious and popular dimensions: the procession of the saint overseen by the parish of San Giovanni Battista (parish priest Father Luigi Pompa), the distribution of blessed bread to the elderly over seventy, and, at the end of the evening, the fireworks. The event, organized by the Fraternita di Misericordia with volunteers and civil service youth, took place under the patronage of the Municipality led by Mayor Pasquale Marchese, who described the festival as one of the most authentic expressions of the community.

The reference airport is Bari-Palese, while the main railway station in the area is Foggia.
The festival takes place throughout the historic center and admission is free. Food and wine trails with tastings generally require purchasing a pass or booking in advance (in previous editions, call +39 349 5297040). For the updated program, it is recommended to follow the channels of the Fraternita di Misericordia of Castelluccio Valmaggiore, the parish of San Giovanni Battista, and the Municipality.
Warm and comfortable clothing is recommended, suitable for the still-chilly March evenings in the mountains, along with footwear appropriate for the village's stone streets.
