San Giovanni in Festa, the heart of summer in Sambuceto

In the second half of July, Piazza San Rocco in Sambuceto, the most populous district of San Giovanni Teatino (Chieti, Abruzzo), transforms into the open-air stage for San Giovanni in Festa. For eleven nights, the square fills with music, lights, the aroma of arrosticini, and families gathering for this annual tradition. It is a classic Abruzzese village festival where major national concerts blend seamlessly with evening bingo and ballroom orchestras.

A community festival by the Pro Loco

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of San Giovanni Teatino "Primavera '94", with the patronage of the Municipality. The format is that of a grand popular festival: every evening, starting at 9:00 PM, the stage hosts national artists, cover bands, comedians, emerging local singers, and dance orchestras. Surrounding the stage are a rich food court featuring typical Abruzzese flavors, a baby park for children, and the traditional bingo with significant prizes. Admission is always free, a hallmark the festival has maintained for years.

Arrosticini nights and gastronomy

The culinary heart of the festival is the famous arrosticini nights, featuring the iconic sheep skewers of Abruzzese cuisine offered at a symbolic price. Around this collective ritual, the Pro Loco organizes entertainment and lighthearted challenges, such as the longest skewer-stacking attempts, which have attracted influencers and crowds alike over the years. The food area also offers other traditional local dishes, while the final evenings include watermelon distribution and a traditional fireworks display.

The hub of the event is Piazza San Rocco, in the heart of Sambuceto. Its location, just minutes from Pescara and the motorway junction, makes it easily accessible from the entire Chieti-Pescara metropolitan area. San Giovanni in Festa effectively opens the Sangiò Estate season, the summer event program promoted by the municipal administration that accompanies citizens and families throughout the season.
