In the heart of inland Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta, the town of Riesi celebrates the San Giovanni Bosco Festival every year. Known as Don Bosco, he was the founder of the Salesian congregation and the patron saint of youth. While the liturgical feast falls on January 31st, the festivities in Riesi extend over several days, involving the entire community in a calendar of religious and popular events.
Riesi boasts a deep connection with the Salesian mission: Don Bosco is venerated as the co-patron of the town, alongside the official patroness, Maria Santissima della Catena. The presence of the Salesians has long shaped the social and educational life of the town, to the extent that a church, an avenue, and even the local musical association are named after the saint. This deep-rooted connection makes the festival a moment of collective identity that goes beyond mere devotion.
The highlight is the Holy Mass celebrated in the church dedicated to the saint of youth, presided over by the director of the Salesian community. On the Sunday of the external celebration, this is followed by the solemn procession of the Don Bosco statue through the city streets, attended by religious, civil, and military authorities. Upon the return of the procession, a fireworks display on Viale Don Bosco marks the conclusion of the festivities.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich popular program. The Sweet Fair is particularly anticipated, featuring stalls and tastings of local products. The Riesi confectionery tradition offers specialties such as mastazzola, cuddireddri, vurciddrata, and muffuletto, to be enjoyed alongside citrus fruits, almonds, olives, and local wine from the Salso Valley.
The San Giovanni Bosco Festival is one of the most heartfelt winter events in Riesi and the entire Sicily region. It is an opportunity to experience the authenticity of a Sicilian community that, in the month of January, gathers around the figure of the educator saint amidst faith, music, traditional sweets, and popular warmth.
For the 2026 edition of the San Giovanni Bosco Festival in Riesi, official dates and programs have not yet been released. Following custom, the festivities should take place around January 31st, the saint's liturgical feast, with Mass in the dedicated church, the procession of the Don Bosco statue through the town streets, and the traditional Sweet Fair. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
Riesi is located in the province of Caltanissetta, in central-southern Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the SS626 (Caltanissetta-Gela) taking the exit towards Riesi. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes away.
Celebrations take place around January 31st, with the external festival and procession held on the Sunday closest to the date.
Religious celebrations and popular festivities are free and open to everyone.
