About San Giovanni Battista in Chiaiano

Every June, the hillside district of Chiaiano gathers to celebrate its patron saint, San Giovanni Battista. The parish oratory hosts the "Naples in Music" evening, featuring the Corale Polifonica Chiaianese and the "Musica Libera Tutti โ€“ AQuaS" youth orchestra, alongside vernacular comedy and a three-day religious preparation. The festivities culminate on June 24th with Mass, a community reception, and fireworks. A heartfelt, free, and authentic local celebration in the heart of Naples.

A neighborhood festival on the Chiaiano hill

Chiaiano is one of the hillside districts of the Municipality of Naples, part of the 8th Municipality alongside Piscinola, Marianella, and Scampia. This corner of the city still preserves the layout of an old agricultural village, nestled among tuff quarries, vegetable gardens, farms, and historic villas. Here, every June, the community gathers around the parish of San Giovanni Battista for the patronal feast: one of the most cherished events in the local calendar, small in scale but deeply rooted in the popular traditions of the Campania region.

The Church of San Giovanni Battista, the heart of the feast

The focal point is the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, of medieval origin and completely rebuilt in 1575, which today displays a 19th-century appearance following restorations from that era. The single-nave interior, with three altars on each side, houses ceiling frescoes by Francesco Iodice, a wooden bust of the Baptist sculpted by Nicolรฒ Fumo in 1723 placed above the high altar, and an early 19th-century sculptural group depicting Archangel Raphael and Tobias. Next to the church lies the small oratory of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary, decorated with 18th-century stuccoes and a marble altar: it is this parish oratory that hosts the festival's music and theatre evenings.

"Naples in Music": the evening that gives the festival its name

The secular program revolves around "Naples in Music," an evening dedicated to Neapolitan song and the local popular repertoire. The stars are two local groups: the Corale Polifonica Chiaianese and the "Musica Libera Tutti โ€“ AQuaS" children's and youth social orchestra, a music education project for local children and teenagers, conducted by maestro Demetrio Moricca. This is no ordinary concert; it is the neighborhood singing to itself, with the youngest on stage and families in the audience. Music is accompanied by a night of vernacular theatre performed by local amateur companies, while parish volunteers manage the refreshment area.

The Triduum and the Solemnity of June 24th

The religious aspect follows the liturgical calendar. In the days leading up to June 24th, a three-day preparation (triduum) is held. The day of the solemnity opens with a morning wake-up call and the festive ringing of bells, continues with the Holy Rosary and Solemn Mass, and concludes with a community reception and fireworks. The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on June 24th, is one of the few Catholic feasts linked to a birth rather than a martyrdom. In Naples, the night of San Giovanni still retains a strong aura of popular traditions linked to fire, water, and herbs, making it one of the most celebrated dates in the northern suburban villages.

Organizers

  • Parish of San Giovanni Battista in Chiaiano, led by parish priest Father Giuseppe Cacciapuoti
  • San Giovanni Battista Association, which manages the reception and hospitality for the faithful
  • Volunteers, catechists, and parish groups who set up the oratory and the refreshment area

Why it is worth visiting

It is not a grand city festival, and it does not pretend to be: it is a grassroots, free celebration experienced in a courtyard and an oratory. Visitors from outside will find the least touristy and most authentic side of Naplesโ€”the hillside villages where devotion to the patron saint intertwines with music, dialect theatre, and conviviality. For a visitor, it is also an opportunity to discover a district easily reached by the Metro Line 1, which almost no guidebook mentions: a simple and direct way to understand how Campania still lives its patronal feasts today.

San Giovanni Battista in Chiaiano โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Chiaiano patronal feast took place from Saturday, June 20th to Wednesday, June 24th, between the oratory and the parish church of San Giovanni Battista. It opened with the "Naples in Music" evening, featuring the Corale Polifonica Chiaianese and the "Musica Libera Tutti โ€“ AQuaS" youth orchestra conducted by maestro Demetrio Moricca; the following day, the comedy "Il mistero di Bellavista" was performed. After the triduum, the June 24th solemnity featured Mass, a reception, and fireworks.

Five days for the patron saint

The 2026 edition combined, as per tradition, the secular and liturgical parts. The two performance evenings were held in the parish oratory, both starting at 8:30 PM, with the refreshment point active throughout.

Music and theatre

On Saturday, June 20th, the "Naples in Music" evening brought together the Corale Polifonica Chiaianese and the "Musica Libera Tutti โ€“ AQuaS" children's and youth social orchestra, conducted by maestro Demetrio Moricca: a concert built on the Neapolitan repertoire and largely entrusted to the neighborhood's young musicians. On Sunday, June 21st, it was time for theatre, with the comedy "Il mistero di Bellavista" performed by the company directed by Salvatore Zanni.

The Triduum and the Solemnity

From June 21st to 23rd, the traditional preparation triduum was celebrated. On Wednesday, June 24th, the day of the solemnity, the day began with a morning wake-up call and the festive ringing of bells; at 6:30 PM, the Holy Rosary, and at 7:00 PM, the Holy Mass in the oratory presided over by Father Carmine De Marco. Following this, a reception offered by the San Giovanni Battista Association and fireworks concluded the festival.

A free-entry edition

As every year, all events were free, organized by the parish led by Father Giuseppe Cacciapuoti and local volunteers in the 8th Municipality of the Municipality of Naples.
