The historic carnival of San Giorgio a Liri

The San Giorgio Carnival is the most anticipated winter event in San Giorgio a Liri, a town in the lower Liri Valley located in the far south of the province of Frosinone, between the Aurunci Mountains and the Liri River. Established in the mid-1980s, the carnival reached its 41st edition in 2026, cementing its status as one of the town's most deeply rooted traditions. The municipality officially includes it in the calendar of historic local festivals, alongside the celebrations for Saint Joseph, the patron saint feast of Saint George the Martyr on April 23rd, and the Saint Rocco celebrations in mid-August.

The parade of allegorical floats

The heart of the event is the grand parade that winds through the streets of the town center: allegorical floats prepared throughout the winter months by associations and volunteer groups, accompanied by masquerade groups, music, and a shower of confetti. As in the most authentic carnivals of the province, the floats blend fantasy, satire, and current events, while the costumes involve both young and old in an afternoon of festivities open to everyone. The day concludes with the awards ceremony for the masquerade groups, the highlight of the event.

The prize competition

Allegorical floats and masquerade groups participate in an official competition governed by municipal regulations, published annually alongside the registration form on the official website. Applications are submitted to the Municipal Cultural and School Office in Piazzale degli Eroi: for the 2026 edition, registration closed at 12:00 PM on February 10th. The competition is designed to stimulate the creativity of local associations and keep the quality of the parade high year after year.

A tradition promoted by the Municipality

The San Giorgio Carnival is organized directly by the Municipality of San Giorgio a Liri, with the stated goal of enhancing the historic Carnival tradition and promoting the active participation of associations and the entire citizenry. This formula has ensured the event's continuity for over four decades: the 40th edition in 2025 was celebrated with an entire weekend of festivities, while in 2026 the festival returned to its classic mid-February slot.

San Giorgio a Liri and the Ciociaria region

San Giorgio a Liri is a town in southern Lazio, about twenty kilometers from Cassino and approximately 45 kilometers from the provincial capital, Frosinone, along the route that descends from the Liri Valley toward the sea at Formia. The carnival is a deeply felt tradition throughout the Ciociaria region, where almost every town organizes its own parade; the one in San Giorgio is among the longest-running in the area and represents an ideal opportunity to discover this corner of the Lazio region, between the historic heritage of Montecassino, the villages of the valley, and the flavors of Ciociarian cuisine.
