Opera under the medieval towers, in the heart of Tuscany
The San Gimignano International Opera Festival is one of Tuscany's longest-running and most beloved open-air opera events. Every summer, it transforms the historic center of San Gimignano—a medieval jewel in the province of Siena and a UNESCO World Heritage site—into an open-air stage where grand opera engages with the architecture of its famous towers.
Performances are held in the city's most scenic locations: the spectacular Piazza del Duomo, Piazza Sant'Agostino, and above all, the Pieve di Cellole, an ancient Romanesque church nestled in the Tuscan countryside where, in 1917, Giacomo Puccini conceived his famous opera Suor Angelica. Because of this deep connection, the staging of Suor Angelica at the Pieve di Cellole has become the most anticipated and iconic event of every edition.
Now in its 91st edition, the festival boasts a history rooted in the early 20th century, making it one of the oldest opera festivals on the national scene. Over the years, it has featured the greatest titles of the Italian and international repertoire, from Puccini to Rossini, Donizetti to Verdi, complete with live orchestras, choirs, and international casts.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of San Gimignano in collaboration with Opera Laboratori, Sillabe, and the Teatro Goldoni of Livorno. It is part of the broader city summer program "Accade d'Estate", which brings the city and its surrounding areas to life with over eighty events, including cinema, concerts, theater, and culture from June to September.
Alongside the evening performances, the festival offers Opera Kids, an initiative designed to introduce children and families to the world of opera through accessible and engaging formats. It is a way to cultivate the audience of the future and make opera a shared heritage for all generations.
Attending an opera at sunset, with the medieval towers of San Gimignano silhouetted against the Val d'Elsa sky, is an experience that transcends the performance itself. The festival is one of the most authentic ways to experience Tuscany in summer, combining musical excellence with the beauty of one of the region's most visited villages.
The 91st edition of the San Gimignano International Opera Festival is scheduled from Monday, July 20 to Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as part of the "Accade d'Estate" summer program. Performances will be held in various venues within the historic center, including the traditional and highly anticipated staging of Giacomo Puccini's Suor Angelica at the Pieve di Cellole, the very place where the Maestro conceived the opera in 1917.
Opera Kids, the initiative that introduces children to the world of opera, is also confirmed for this edition. The event is promoted by the Municipality of San Gimignano in partnership with Opera Laboratori and the festival's historical partners.
The detailed program, including opera titles, casts, schedules, and specific venues, will be published by the organizers closer to the event. For updates, please consult the Municipality of San Gimignano's website and the official Opera Laboratori channels.
