The historic mountain time trial race from San Giacomo di Brentonico to the summit of Monte Altissimo
The San Giacomo – Altissimo Mountain Time Trial is one of the longest-running mountain races in Trentino. Established in the mid-1950s, it takes place in the municipality of Brentonico, in the Province of Trento, on the plateau overlooking the Trentino side of Lake Garda. The race tests athletes on an uphill time-trial course that leads from the village of San Giacomo to the summit of Monte Altissimo, right at the foot of the Rifugio Damiano Chiesa.
The track measures just over six kilometers with approximately 880–900 meters of positive elevation gain. The format is an individual time trial: athletes start at regular intervals and tackle the ascent against the clock, winding through the woods, trails, and high-altitude pastures of the Altissimo massif. The finish line, located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters near the Rifugio Damiano Chiesa, offers a panoramic view of Lake Garda and the surrounding peaks.
The event is a national FIDAL race, valid for the Gran Premio Montagne Trentine, and is dedicated to the memory of Augusto Girardelli with the memorial race of the same name. Alongside the main event, youth races from the Scoiattoli Trentini circuit are held for younger runners on a shorter loop. Over the years, the time trial has also served as the Regional Vertical Championship for both individuals and teams.
The event is organized by the ASD Lagarina Crus Team, an association that has managed this historic race for over two decades. Beyond the competitive aspect, the race day features the traditional pasta party and afternoon awards ceremony, creating a festive atmosphere that brings together athletes, families, and mountain enthusiasts from the Lagarina region.
Brentonico and its plateau, nestled between the Vallagarina valley and Monte Baldo, represent one of the most evocative destinations in southern Trentino for hiking and mountain running. The San Giacomo – Altissimo Mountain Time Trial combines sport, nature, and tradition, showcasing a stunning alpine environment just a stone's throw from Lake Garda.
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, the 72nd edition of the San Giacomo – Altissimo Mountain Time Trial was held in the municipality of Brentonico, Trentino. The time trial followed the classic route from the village of San Giacomo to the Rifugio Damiano Chiesa, on the summit of Monte Altissimo, covering over six kilometers of ascent and approximately 880 meters of positive elevation gain.
The 2026 edition, in addition to being valid for the Gran Premio Montagne Trentine and renewing the Augusto Girardelli Memorial, served as the Regional Vertical Championship for both individual and team rankings. As per tradition, the day also featured the youth races of the Scoiattoli Trentini circuit, followed by the pasta party and afternoon awards ceremony organized by the ASD Lagarina Crus Team.
Brentonico is accessible via the A22 Brennero motorway, taking the Rovereto Sud exit and following signs for the Brentonico plateau and the village of San Giacomo. The nearest train station is Rovereto (Verona–Bolzano line).
Athletes meet at the Centro Fondo in San Giacomo; the time trial starts at regular intervals throughout the morning.
