The patronal feast of Palazzo Canavese, blending faith, tradition, and community spirit
The San Genesio Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Palazzo Canavese, a small town in the Province of Turin nestled in the rolling hills of the Canavese region, in Piedmont. Dedicated to San Genesio, the town's patron saint, the festival is traditionally held around the last Sunday of August, transforming the village streets and squares into a vibrant hub of faith, meeting, and conviviality.
The religious aspect remains the core of the event: the solemn Mass in honor of San Genesio is followed by the traditional procession through the village streets, drawing both residents and the many former locals who return to the village specifically for this occasion. It is a rite renewed from generation to generation, safeguarding the identity of a small community deeply rooted in its heritage.
Surrounding the religious observance is the popular festival, organized in collaboration with the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Palazzo Canavese. Every evening, the food pavilion opens its doors, offering authentic Canavese cuisine and local products, accompanied by a bar service. The evenings continue with music and ballo liscio (traditional ballroom dancing), entertainment for all ages, and activities that bring the whole town together.
The San Genesio Patronal Festival is more than just a religious celebration; it is a reunion for the entire community. Families, the elderly, children, and visitors from neighboring towns gather for a few days of shared happiness. It is a genuine expression of popular tradition that continues to thrive in the small villages of the Canavese, where the patron saint's feast still marks the rhythm of village life today.
Attending the festival is also the perfect opportunity to explore Palazzo Canavese and its surroundings: a hilly area rich in nature, vineyards, and small historic centers, located just a short distance from Ivrea and Lake Viverone. An authentic corner of Piedmont where village traditions retain all their charm.
