San Famiano Festival (Patron Saint of Gallese)

A patronal festival spanning three weeks

In Gallese, a small town in the province of Viterbo overlooking the Tiber Valley, the San Famiano Festival is not just a single day, but a long season of popular devotion. It begins on July 17th, the date tradition marks as the arrival of the pilgrim saint in the village, and concludes on August 10th, following four central days that bring the entire community together. It is one of the most significant identity-defining events in the Tuscia area and the entire Lazio region, recognized as a traditional festival of regional importance.

Who was San Famiano?

Famiano was a monk of Germanic origin who, after a life as a pilgrim and hermit, arrived in Gallese in July 1150 upon returning from a journey to the Holy Land, passing away just a few days later on August 8th. Pope Adrian IV canonized him in 1554; since then, the village has guarded his remains in the Sanctuary dedicated to him, which serves as a place of pilgrimage and the heart of the entire festival. The anniversary of his death on August 8th remains the most deeply felt day on the Gallese calendar.

The Bengalata: the most anticipated moment

The evening of August 7th is one that no one wants to miss. The day begins at noon with the ringing of bells and the traditional "bombe scure" (dark bombs), small smoke clouds that resonate throughout the town. At 8:30 PM, the procession departs from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and reaches the Sanctuary of San Famiano, where a solemn mass is celebrated at the patron saint's tomb. Upon the return, as the statue of the saint overlooks the historic center, thousands of flares are ignited along the Crenelated Walls: this is the Bengalata, a literal rain of fire that envelops the medieval village, representing one of the most original pyrotechnic displays in Lazio.

The historical pageant and the Corsa alla Stella

On August 8th, the town travels back five centuries. In the afternoon, about forty participants in Renaissance costumes—magistrates, nobles, and the Musici Città di Gallese—parade from Piazza Santa Maria to the "Dino Nelli" Municipal Stadium. Here, the Corsa alla Stella (Race for the Star) takes place: six knights, assigned by draw to the town's six districts, must pierce as many suspended stars as possible with a lance in the shortest time. The winning district claims the Palio di San Famiano, a banner whose tradition dates back to the 16th century. On the morning of the same day, a solemn procession takes place with the saint's statue, accompanied by the Zitelle: young local women chosen by lot and dressed in historical costumes, a custom originating in the 16th century to provide a dowry for less affluent girls.

The fair, the band, and the games

August 9th is dedicated to the ancient Livestock and Goods Fair, a custom renewed for centuries that brings stalls, breeders, and visitors from across the valley to town, followed in the evening by a concert from the "Città di Gallese" Music Band. On August 10th, the celebrations conclude joyfully with popular games for children, a team treasure hunt, and a footrace.

Minor program and the Taverna

• July 17th: Pilgrimage to San Famiano a Lungo, site of the first miracle, and Renaissance Day with an archery challenge accompanied by the Musici Città di Gallese
• Early August: Opening of the Committee Taverna, dance evening, "Moonlight Serenades" concert with the "Teofilo Gargari" polyphonic choir, and an afternoon dedicated to children in the square
• August 7th–10th: Processions, Bengalata, historical pageant, Corsa alla Stella, fair, and games

How to experience the festival

The organization is entrusted to the San Famiano Festival Committee, formed each year by the local conscription classes, together with the Confraternity of San Famiano, the parish community, and the Pro Loco, under the patronage of the Municipality of Gallese. It is a deeply communal festival where outsiders are welcomed without reservation: you can eat at the committee's tavern, follow the procession with the locals, and wait for dusk on August 7th beneath the walls. For the foreign visitor, it is an opportunity to understand how, in the villages of central Italy, the cult of the patron saint continues to be the cornerstone of the civil calendar as well as the religious one.
