The patronal feast of Sant'Oreste

The Sant'Edisto Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Sant'Oreste, a village in the province of Rome nestled on the slopes of Mount Soratte, the solitary mountain overlooking the Tiber Valley north of the capital. Celebrations traditionally take place from October 9th to 12th, culminating on October 12th, the day dedicated to the patron saint. For four days, the town blends religious, historical, musical, and culinary events in a festival meticulously prepared each year by the Municipality of Sant'Oreste and local associations.

Who was Sant'Edisto

According to tradition, Edisto was a soldier in the Roman army and a squire to Nero who converted to Christianity. Discovered while attending a secret liturgy, he was martyred; a church was built on the site of his martyrdom, and the cult that has linked the saint to the Sant'Oreste community for centuries grew around it. The Church remembers him as a martyr on October 12th, the date around which the entire patronal festival revolves.

The 16th-century historical pageant

The most spectacular feature of the festival is the historical re-enactment organized by the Sant'Oreste Historical Group, active since 1991. Ladies, knights, drummers, flag-wavers, and commoners in authentic 16th-century costumes—hand-stitched by members based on historical models—parade through the streets of the historic center, representing all the districts enclosed within the ancient castle walls. The pageant brings local history to life, such as the 1523 skirmish between Sant'Oreste and Civita Castellana over a border dispute, the trial of Francischiello, and the election of the Podestà and Priors. Recent editions have also featured falconers, horses, and guest historical groups, taking the village back five centuries for the weekend.

The giant cake and delicious traditions

On October 10th, for the name day of St. Oreste, the square gathers for the tasting of the giant cake, a massive ring cake prepared for the entire community. It is one of the most convivial and anticipated moments of the festival, accompanied throughout the days by dinners, tastings, and food events showcasing local products.

Procession, band, and fireworks

On the patron saint's day, the festival reaches its religious peak: after the solemn mass, the procession carries the statue of Sant'Edisto through the streets of the town, accompanied by the brass band. The day traditionally concludes with a fireworks display and live concerts and shows that animate the squares and the municipal theater until late at night.

The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Sant'Oreste and its surroundings: the medieval historic center, the views over the Tiber Valley, and the Mount Soratte Nature Reserve, with its trails, hermitages, and the famous bunker carved into the mountain, which is sometimes open for visits during the festival.
