In the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia, the village of Castel Sant'Elia (Province of Viterbo, Lazio) hosts one of the most evocative Christmas representations in the region. Each year, around Christmas time, the pine forest of the Sanctuary of SS.ma Maria ad Rupes transforms into a Nativity village, where performers in costume bring to life scenes of work, craftsmanship, and daily life from a bygone era.

A journey through life, light, and silence

The living nativity is not merely a show, but a pilgrimage: visitors traverse the pine forest following a route of animated scenes, passing through workshops, ancient trades, fires, and huts, until they reach the representation of the Holy Family. The production is directed by Francesco Madonna, who curates the staging with a special focus on atmosphere, created through warm lighting and moments of reflection. For those interested, there is also an alternative panoramic route that starts from the historic Basilica of Sant'Elia and winds along the so-called "Way of the Saints," offering unique views over the Suppentonia Valley.

The Sanctuary of Maria ad Rupes and the Holy Stairs

The setting for the event is among the most fascinating in the area. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria ad Rupes, carved into the tuff rock, is reached via a famous Holy Staircase of 144 steps, built at the end of the 18th century by Friar Giuseppe Andrea Rodio after fourteen years of work. Just below, nestled in the greenery, lies the Basilica of Sant'Elia, a jewel of Romanesque and Lombard art that preserves Byzantine-style frescoes and ancient Cosmatesque floors. This blend of nature, spirituality, and history makes the living nativity of Castel Sant'Elia an experience that goes beyond a simple visit.

A community tradition

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Castel Sant'Elia in collaboration with the Municipality, the Parish, and the Sanctuary, with the support of the Lazio Region. Dozens of volunteers and local performers participate each year in the setup, confirming that the living nativity is, above all, a moment of identity and community gathering. Admission is by voluntary donation, highlighting the welcoming spirit of the initiative.
