Saint Rose Festival — Transport of the Macchina di Santa Rosa

Viterbo's patronal feast, a UNESCO Heritage site

The Saint Rose Festival is the most defining moment of the year for Viterbo, the capital of the province of the same name in northern Lazio. Its climax is the Transport of the Macchina di Santa Rosa on the evening of September 3rd: a monumental illuminated tower, over thirty meters tall and weighing about five tons, is carried on the shoulders of about one hundred porters through the medieval historic center. Since 2013, the Transport has been inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as part of the Network of Italian Shoulder-Borne Processional Structures, alongside the Gigli of Nola, the Varia of Palmi, and the Candelieri of Sassari.

The origins: Rose of Viterbo and 1258

The festival has its roots in September 4, 1258, when, at the behest of Pope Alexander IV, the body of Rose—a young and beloved religious figure from Viterbo who died in 1251—was translated in a solemn procession to the monastery that is now the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa. The tradition of the Transport was born from that translation: over the centuries, the processional canopy has evolved into a true mobile architecture, increasingly tall and spectacular, with its design renewed every five years through a public competition.

Dies Natalis, the Macchina in motion

Since 2024, Dies Natalis has been parading—the Macchina designed by Viterbo architect Raffaele Ascenzi: a 33-meter structure divided into five sections, populated by dozens of angel statues with faces inspired by citizens of Viterbo and crowned by the figure of the Saint. When darkness falls and the city turns off its lights, the Macchina advances, sparkling between the palace facades, in an emotion-filled silence broken only by the orders of the head porter and the applause of the crowd.

The route of the Transport

The Transport departs at 9:00 PM from Piazza San Sisto, near Porta Romana, and covers about 1,200 meters with five stops: Via Garibaldi, Piazza Fontana Grande, Via Cavour, Piazza del Plebiscito, Via Roma, Piazza delle Erbe, Corso Italia with a stop at the Suffragio church, and Piazza del Teatro. The grand finale is the steep climb up Via Santa Rosa, tackled at a run, reaching the churchyard of the Sanctuary where the Macchina remains on display and illuminated for the following evenings.

The Porters of Saint Rose

The protagonists are the Porters of Saint Rose, gathered in a guild that selects the carriers through rigorous strength tests: wearing a white uniform, a red sash at the waist, and a leather headpiece, they carry a load of nearly 50 kilos each on their shoulders. Being a porter is an honor passed down from generation to generation and is one of the deepest traits of Viterbo's identity.

A weeks-long program

A rich calendar promoted by the Municipality of Viterbo revolves around September 3rd: the transport of the mini-macchine of the Pilastro, Santa Barbara, and Centro Storico districts, carried by mini-porters; the historical pageant in costume and the procession with the Heart of Saint Rose on September 2nd; the novena at the Sanctuary; concerts at Pratogiardino; the traditional funfair at Porta Faul; and the Saint Rose Fair on September 4th, the day of the liturgical feast.

In the heart of Tuscia

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Viterbo, the City of Popes: the medieval district of San Pellegrino, the Palace of the Popes, the thermal baths, and the villages of the Viterbo Tuscia region. In early September, the city is in full swing, amidst the typical flavors of the province and an atmosphere that combines faith, civic pride, and spectacle.
