The patron saint festival of Moscufo, in the heart of the Abruzzo olive oil village
The San Cristoforo Patronal Feast is the most anticipated annual event in Moscufo, a small hillside village in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo. San Cristoforo, the protector of travelers and pilgrims, is the town's patron saint and is celebrated every year on July 25th, a day when the community gathers around its church and traditions. The heart of the celebrations is the parish church of San Cristoforo, a 17th-century building constructed in 1607 that stands in the center of the village, opposite the town hall.
The most solemn moment of the festival is the procession which, following mass, accompanies the saint's statue along the streets of the old town, among the stone houses overlooking the Tavo valley. The participation of the faithful, the accompaniment of the brass band, and the illuminations lighting up the squares create an atmosphere of both reflection and celebration, typical of patronal feasts in Southern Italy.
Alongside the religious events, the patronal feast offers a rich secular program: concerts and musical performances in the square, dancing evenings, games and entertainment for families, and the traditional fireworks that close the festivities. The food stalls offer the genuine flavors of the territory: Moscufo is, in fact, considered one of the villages of the so-called golden triangle of olive oil in Abruzzo, and its extra virgin olive oil accompanies dishes of the local peasant cuisine.
The festival is also the ideal opportunity to discover Moscufo and its treasures. A few steps from the center is the famous Abbey of Santa Maria del Lago, a 12th-century Romanesque church that houses an extraordinary stucco ambo created by the master Nicodemo da Guardiagrele in 1158, one of the masterpieces of medieval Abruzzese art. Visiting Moscufo during the San Cristoforo feast means experiencing the authenticity of a small municipality in the Pescara hinterland, where religious tradition, hospitality, and the culture of olive oil intertwine in a unique experience.
The 2026 edition of the San Cristoforo Patronal Feast in Moscufo (Pescara) is celebrated around July 25, 2026, the patron saint's day. As per tradition, the solemn mass in the parish church of San Cristoforo, the procession through the village streets, the accompaniment of the band, the illuminations, and the entertainment in the square are expected. The complete program with times and guests will be released by the Parish of San Cristoforo and the Municipality of Moscufo closer to the event.
Moscufo can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Pescara Nord-Cittร Sant'Angelo exit) or from the A25, then continuing along the provincial roads of the Pescara hinterland. The nearest train station is Pescara Centrale, connected to the village by local bus lines.
The patronal feast takes place around July 25th, the day of San Cristoforo.
Participation in the religious and secular festivities is free and open to the entire community.
