The religious festival of the Madonna degli Angeli district in Loreto Aprutino
The Madonna degli Angeli Festival is the most anticipated summer event for the Madonna degli Angeli district, a rural area located about a mile and a half from the historic center of Loreto Aprutino, a hilltop village in the province of Pescara, in the heart of Abruzzo. Every year, in the first days of August, the small community gathers around the little church dedicated to the Virgin of the Angels to renew a devotion passed down through generations.
The core of the festival remains deeply religious. Liturgical celebrations and the procession, which carries the statue of the Madonna through the streets of the district amidst the faithful, festive lights, and the sound of the band, take place around the Church of the Madonna degli Angeli, a subsidiary church of the local parish. It is a ritual that marks the summer season for the residents and for those who have moved away but return punctually to reconnect with their roots.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the festival comes alive with the typical atmosphere of village fairs: food stalls offering the flavors of Abruzzo cuisine, music and dancing, evening shows, and entertainment for all ages. Evenings spent under the festive lights are a chance to gather, share an outdoor meal, and extend the celebration late into the night, often concluding with a traditional fireworks display.
The organization is entrusted to the San Zopito Festival Committee, a historic Loreto-based committee also linked to the town's major patronal celebrations, together with the district's CAMAFA Association. Their voluntary efforts keep alive a tradition that represents an important piece of the identity of Loreto Aprutino, a town known for its splendid medieval center, high-quality extra virgin olive oil, and a rich calendar of events that enliven the summer in Abruzzo.
The festival is also an excellent opportunity to visit Loreto Aprutino, listed among the most characteristic villages in the province of Pescara. The historic center, dominated by Castello Chiola, the Sanctuary of San Zopito, and the surrounding vineyards and olive groves, offers an ideal setting to combine participation in the festival with exploring the local area and its food and wine culture.
The 2026 Madonna degli Angeli Festival will be held on August 2 and 3, 2026, in the district of the same name in Loreto Aprutino, as confirmed by the official municipal summer calendar. This year, the festival will again be managed by the San Zopito Festival Committee in collaboration with the CAMAFA Association.
The detailed program โ including times for religious services, the procession, musical performances, and evening entertainment โ has not yet been published. Updated information will be provided by the organizers and the Loreto Aprutino Tourist Office closer to the event date.
