The summer festival celebrating sagne e ceci in the village of Castelferrato
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sagne n'Gariola is one of the most cherished summer festivals in the Torrevecchia Teatina area, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo province of Chieti. It takes place in the square of Castelferrato, a small hamlet of the municipality of Torrevecchia Teatina, where for one night the entire village comes alive with long tables, the aroma of home cooking, and music. The event is organized by the Associazione Culturale Ricreativa Penelope, a local volunteer group that has kept this community tradition alive for years.
At the heart of the festival is a humble, ancient dish: sagne, a pasta made from water, durum wheat flour, and salt—no eggs—typical of the Abruzzo hinterland. In the past, the simplicity of these ingredients made sagne an everyday staple, contrasting with egg-based pasta reserved for holidays. Served with chickpeas, they create a thick, flavorful soup that tells the gastronomic history of the peasant families of the Teatino region. The local dialect name of the event refers directly to this traditional preparation.
The stalls open in the late afternoon/evening, usually around 8:00 PM, and offer, alongside the essential sagne e ceci:
The format is the classic village festival style: affordable dishes served at tables set up in the square, in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
Dinner is accompanied by live music and entertainment, turning the square of Castelferrato into a meeting point for all ages. The Sagne n'Gariola is more than just a culinary event; it is a moment of community for the hamlet and surrounding towns, keeping the identity and folk traditions of this corner of Abruzzo alive.
Reaching its sixteenth edition in 2025, the Sagne n'Gariola has established itself as a fixed date on the summer calendar in the Torrevecchia Teatina area, usually taking place between late July and early August. It is a fantastic reason to discover Castelferrato and the countryside of the Teatino, amidst genuine flavors and Abruzzese hospitality.
