The summer feast of Molfetta's patron saint, between the Cathedral and the sea
The San Corrado Summer Festival is one of the most heartfelt moments in the religious calendar of Molfetta, a city in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in Apulia. In early July, the local community gathers around its patron, Saint Conrad of Bavaria, the young saint whose history is inextricably linked to Molfetta's identity. While the main feast falls in winter, this summer recurrence holds a unique significance: it commemorates the transfer of the Saint's relics from the Cathedral to the Duomo, which occurred on July 10, 1785.
The center of the celebrations is the Duomo di San Corrado, the ancient Romanesque cathedral overlooking the old harbor, with its two bell towers that have been the city's symbol for centuries. Here, at the opening of the festivities, the reliquary bust of the Saint, guardian of his remains, is enthroned and remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful throughout the festival.
The program spans five days. After the enthronement of the reliquary bust, the Prayer Triduum is celebrated, featuring the recitation of the Holy Rosary and a Eucharistic Celebration dedicated to Saint Conrad. The final day is the true summer festival: the "L'Armonia Molfettese" folk band parades through the city streets, followed by a solemn pontifical mass and the procession of the reliquary bust, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, civil and military authorities, and the people.
The most evocative moment is the procession that winds through the historic center, following a route that connects the Duomo to the Cathedral via Banchina Seminario and Corso Dante. The procession is accompanied by the "Santa Cecilia โ Cittร di Molfetta" Grand Band and folk music, while the liturgical animation is entrusted to the Cappella Musicale Corradiana. It is an opportunity to rediscover the alleys and squares of the ancient village overlooking the Adriatic in the long light of summer evenings.
The San Corrado Summer Festival is not just a liturgical appointment, but a pillar of Molfetta's collective identity, weaving together faith, historical memory, and a sense of community. For those visiting Apulia during this period, it is an authentic opportunity to experience popular Apulian devotion away from the tourist circuits, within the walls of one of the most fascinating Romanesque cathedrals in Southern Italy.
The celebrations of the 2026 San Corrado Summer Festival open on Wednesday, July 1st, with the enthronement of the reliquary bust in the Duomo of Molfetta and continue for five days of prayer, sacred music, and popular devotion. The triduum accompanies the faithful until the final Sunday, when the city celebrates its patron saint with a folk music parade, a solemn pontifical mass, and the traditional procession of the reliquary bust along the streets of the ancient village overlooking the Adriatic.
The celebrations take place at the Duomo di San Corrado (old Cathedral), overlooking the Molfetta harbor, and at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The procession crosses the historic center along the route: Duomo โ Banchina Seminario โ Corso Dante โ Cathedral.
In the first days of July, with the final day marking the main summer festival. Admission to all celebrations is free.
Molfetta is served by the railway station on the Adriatic line (Bari-Barletta-Foggia); the historic center and the Duomo are within walking distance from the station. By car, take the Molfetta exit from the SS16 Adriatica highway.
