The Marian feast at the medieval sanctuary of Cesano, nestled in the olive groves of Terlizzi
Every year, in the first days of July, the community of Terlizzi (Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia) gathers around the Sanctuary of Santa Maria SS. di Cesano for the Madonna del Popolo Festival. The event is closely linked to the Marian feast of the Visitation, celebrated on July 2nd, when the small rural sanctuary has for centuries become a pilgrimage destination for the local population. It is an intimate and heartfelt celebration, far from the grand spectacle of the August Festa Maggiore, but no less dear to the people of Terlizzi.
The charm of the festival also stems from its setting. The church of Santa Maria di Cesano is a rare medieval complex nestled in the olive groves of the Terlizzi countryside. Its origins date back to 1040, when the Norman Unfrida ordered its reconstruction on the site of a pre-existing building in the ancient hamlet of Cesano. In 1092, Duke Roger, son of Robert Guiscard, donated the Santa Maria di Cesano estate to the Benedictine monastery of San Lorenzo d'Aversa; in 1223, Emperor Frederick II of Swabia confirmed the monks' legitimate possession of the church and its assets. Since 1756, with Terlizzi becoming an episcopal seat, the small church passed to diocesan administration. Visiting Cesano on the day of the festival means crossing a thousand years of history, amidst Norman stone, the silence of the countryside, and popular devotion.
The centerpiece is the sunset Eucharistic celebration, presided over by the Bishop and accompanied by the parish choir. The liturgical part is followed by a more festive and familiar moment, animated by the youth of Catholic Action, with entertainment designed for children and families. The evening concludes with a sense of conviviality, featuring the tasting of traditional panzerotti in a simple, community-focused atmosphere. The event is organized by the Co-Cathedral Parish of San Michele Arcangelo with the patronage of the Municipality of Terlizzi.
The Madonna del Popolo Festival combines three dimensions typical of Puglian religious feasts: the spirituality of the Marian pilgrimage, the rediscovery of the historical-artistic heritage of a often-overlooked medieval complex, and the conviviality of a village evening filled with songs, smiles, and hot panzerotti. It is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of inland Puglia, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
Terlizzi, known as the "city of flowers" for its floricultural vocation, boasts a rich tradition of religious festivals: from the great Festa Maggiore dedicated to the Madonna di Sovereto, with its imposing triumphal float, to the celebrations for Saint Michael the Archangel, the city's patron saint. The Madonna del Popolo Festival in Cesano fits into this devotional fabric as one of the most intimate and evocative events of the Terlizzi summer.
The 2026 Madonna del Popolo Festival takes place at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria SS. di Cesano, in the Terlizzi countryside. Initially set for July 2nd, the celebration was postponed to Wednesday, July 8, 2026 due to forecasted adverse weather conditions. The heart of the festival remains the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Bishop, followed by a festive moment dedicated to the youth and a magic show for all ages, all accompanied by the tasting of traditional panzerotti in a family atmosphere.
(The festival, initially scheduled for July 2, was postponed to July 8 due to adverse weather conditions.)
Throughout the evening, it will be possible to taste traditional panzerotti in a simple, family-friendly atmosphere.
