On June 3rd, Laureana Cilento honors its patron saint with a novena and procession
On June 3rd, Laureana Cilento, a small hillside town in the province of Salerno overlooking the gulf, celebrates San Cono, its patron saint. The patronal feast is one of the most significant events in the local religious calendar, involving not only the town center but also the hamlets and districts that make up the municipality in this historic corner of Campania known as Cilento.
San Cono was born in Diano, modern-day Teggiano, towards the end of the 11th century into the Indelli family. As a young boy, he felt the call to monastic life and fled to the monastery of Santa Maria di Cadossa near Montesano sulla Marcellana. Tradition holds that to escape his parents, who had come to retrieve him, he hid in a lit oven and emerged unharmed; this miracle convinced his family to accept his vocation. He died very young at the beginning of the 12th century, and his cult was officially recognized on April 27, 1871. In addition to June 3rd, his devotion is also marked on September 27th, the date of the translation of his relics, and December 17th.
There is no precise information on when the cult of San Cono arrived in Laureana Cilento, but the testimony of the priest Francesco del Mercato from the early 1600s confirms a deeply rooted devotion: he was the one who translated the Life of the Saint into Italian for the benefit of the faithful, declaring that he had received graces through his intercession. Since then, the protection of San Cono has been invoked by the community against calamities and the difficulties of daily life.
The celebration is not limited to June 3rd alone. In the days leading up to it, a novena is held, highly anticipated by the faithful: the community gathers around the image of the Patron Saint, singing hymns that express affection and gratitude for a protection felt as constant and paternal. It is the most intimate and participatory moment, where the community prepares itself spiritually for the solemnity.
On the day of the feast, the mother church of Santa Maria del Paradiso, which houses the patron's image, hosts solemn Eucharistic celebrations. The image of San Cono then travels through the streets and alleys of the village, welcomed with enthusiasm and gratitude by the inhabitants who invoke him as their protector, bringing his blessing to every home. The religious procession is accompanied by the typical elements of a Cilento patronal feast: the ringing of bells, festive lights, colorful stalls, and, traditionally, fireworks that close the day.
The municipality of Laureana Cilento has just over a thousand inhabitants distributed between the center and the hamlets of Archi, Casaliello, Matonti, San Cono, San Martino, Spinelli, and Vetrali, covering an area of about fourteen square kilometers. The local devotional calendar is particularly rich: the Sunday after Easter, the unique procession of the Holy Martyrs, popularly known as the "Gardeners' Saints," takes place, where all the statues of the Saints kept in the mother church parade through the town streets; on Pentecost Tuesday, the Madonna dell'Acquasanta is celebrated, while the hamlets honor San Biagio in Matonti and San Martino in the homonymous hamlet.
Those visiting Cilento in early June will find this festival an authentic opportunity to connect with village life, far from the beaten paths of the coast. It is not an event built for tourists: it is the day when an entire community recognizes itself in its patron, amidst ancient rites, folk songs, and the conviviality of decorated streets. The olive-covered hills and the views towards the Gulf of Salerno complete a picture that makes the trip worthwhile on its own.
The 2026 edition of the San Cono patronal feast in Laureana Cilento took place, as every year, on June 3rd. The announcement of the solemn festivities came from the parish of Santa Maria del Paradiso on June 1st, with the usual poster summarizing the religious events of the occasion.
The novena in the preceding days gathered the faithful around the image of the patron saint, amidst prayers and traditional hymns. On June 3rd, solemn Eucharistic celebrations in the mother church preceded the procession, a moment when the image of San Cono travels through the streets and alleys of the town, bringing blessings to the homes and families of the community.
As per tradition, the event attracted not only the inhabitants of the center but also those from the hamlets of the Municipality of Laureana Cilento, in the province of Salerno, and the many devotees of Cilento who gather on June 3rd in the towns linked to the cult of the Saint of Diano.
By car: From the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, take the Battipaglia exit and continue along the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore towards Agropoli, then take the provincial roads that climb towards Laureana Cilento. By train: The nearest station is Agropoli-Castellabate on the Tyrrhenian line; from there, continue by bus or taxi. By plane: The reference airports are Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi and Naples Capodichino.
Participation in religious celebrations and the procession is free.
The historic center consists of narrow alleys: it is best to leave your car in the roadside spaces at the entrance to the town and continue on foot. For exact times of masses and the procession, it is best to contact the parish of Santa Maria del Paradiso directly at Via Aversana 2, or check their website. June in inland Cilento is warm during the day but cool in the evening: a light jacket is useful for the procession. For accommodation, you can rely on facilities in Agropoli, Castellabate, and neighboring towns, all within a short distance.
