Devotion to the "Bel Vecchio" through triduums, votive bread, and brass band marches
The San Calogero Festival is held every year on June 18th in Valledolmo, a small town of just under four thousand inhabitants nestled at 746 meters above sea level in the south-western Madonie, in the province of Palermo (Sicily). The date coincides with the anniversary of the hermit saint's death, remembered by tradition as the "Bel Vecchio," and represents one of the most deeply felt moments of devotion for the local community.
San Calogero is one of the most beloved figures in Sicilian popular religion, protector of farmers, the sick, and pilgrims. In Valledolmo, his cult is linked to the Church of Maria SS. della Purità, also known as the New Church, where the wooden statue of the saint is kept. The devotion is nourished by ancient gestures and a rural memory that still endures in this Madonie village today.
The festivities are preceded by a preparatory triduum at the Church of Maria SS. della Purità, featuring the recitation of the chaplet dedicated to the saint and Eucharistic celebrations. The day of the festival, June 18th, opens with the ringing of bells and continues with the Mass, around which the entire day revolves.
The heart of the festival is the blessing and distribution of the Votive Bread, a gesture recalling the charity of San Calogero, remembered for distributing bread to the needy during an epidemic. Among the most characteristic rites are the throwing of "notes" containing the prayers of the faithful from the bell tower and the recognition of the community's "Bel Vecchio." The day is marked by symphonic marches performed by the local brass band, while the evening concludes with the drawing of the traditional lottery.
Valledolmo is more than just San Calogero: the town hosts a rich calendar of festivals and fairs, from the Siccagno Tomato Festival (the local IGP-certified excellence) to the Grape Festival, as well as Holy Week and the Feast of Saint Anthony. Experiencing the San Calogero Festival means coming into contact with the most authentic soul of a Madonie village, where religious devotion and rural identity continue to walk hand in hand.

The festival is free and open to all. Celebrations take place at the Church of Maria SS. della Purità and in the streets of the town center.
Summer season: light clothing and a hat are recommended for the middle of the day. Do not miss the tasting of local products, in particular the siccagno tomato and ricotta cheese.
