The Sea Festival of Porto Empedocle, blending maritime faith and tradition
The Madonna del Carmine Festival, also known as the Sea Festival, is the oldest and most defining celebration of Porto Empedocle, a seaside town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. Its roots are deeply intertwined with the town's history: around 1840, the paranzara fishermen, who arrived from nearby Girgenti, settled permanently on the coast, bringing with them the cult of their patron saint. The church dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine was built in 1863, and since then, the festivities have been renewed every year around July 16th.
The most anticipated and evocative moment is the varchiata a mari, the sea procession during which the artistic statue of the Madonna del Carmine is placed on a boat and taken out to sea. A procession of decorated boats accompanies the statue amidst the festive sound of ship sirens in the harbor and the sparkling of torches and multicolored lights, creating an emotional atmosphere that involves both the faithful and visitors. This tradition, linked to the Sea Festival since 1955, is the religious and popular heart of the event.
Alongside the religious rites, characteristic sea games take place. The most famous is the antenna a mari, a skill competition where contestants must grab a flag fixed to the end of a greased pole placed on the stern of a fishing boat. Not to be missed is the Sagra della Padellata, a moment of collective celebration where fish fried in a giant pan is distributed for free to the public, serving as a symbol of sharing and connection with the sea. The program is completed by a solemn mass in the Madonna del Carmine church, the procession of the statue through the town center, musical performances, and entertainment.
Deeply rooted in the community of Porto Empedocle, the Madonna del Carmine Festival represents an unmissable summer event for the coast of the Agrigento province and all of Sicily. Religion, folklore, and maritime culture merge during these days in July, attracting residents, returning emigrants, and tourists, confirming Porto Empedocle's identity as an authentic seaside town.
The Madonna del Carmine Festival returns to Porto Empedocle in July 2026, faithful to the tradition that links the celebration to the July 16th anniversary. As every year, the most representative moments of the Sea Festival are expected: the solemn mass, the procession of the Madonna's statue through the town streets, the evocative varchiata a mari with the parade of boats, the sea games of the antenna a mari, and the customary Sagra della Padellata with the free distribution of fried fish. The complete program with times and details is released by the organizers and the Municipality of Porto Empedocle in the weeks preceding the event.
The festival takes place around July 16th, with the main events occurring over the following days (traditionally Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).
