About Sammichelese Carnival

The Sammichelese Carnival is the traditional carnival celebration in San Michele di Ganzaria, a small town in the Province of Catania nestled in the Erei Mountains, within the Calatino territory. Between February and March, the historic town center comes alive with masks, confetti, costumed groups, and festive moments that bring together both young and old. It is a deeply felt community event, organized by the Municipality in collaboration with the Pro Loco Sammichelese, which renews a popular tradition of joy, music, and conviviality in the heart of inland Sicily every year.

The Sammichelese Carnival

The Sammichelese Carnival is the annual celebration that brings the streets of San Michele di Ganzaria to life every February and March. Located in the Province of Catania at an altitude of approximately 530 meters in the Erei Mountains, this town is a hidden gem of the Sicilian hinterland. It is one of the most anticipated events for the local community and is officially recognized in the National Archive of Italian Carnivals as a notable event in the Catania province.

A Community Celebration

The carnival of San Michele di Ganzaria preserves the authentic spirit of traditional festivals found in the small towns of inland Sicily. For a few days, the historic center fills with masks, confetti, and streamers, while costumed groups, families, and children parade and gather in the town squares. The event is promoted by the Municipality of San Michele di Ganzaria alongside the Pro Loco Sammichelese, which invites residents and visitors alike to join in with the joyful and inclusive spirit that defines this tradition.

Tradition and Folklore

Like all carnivals, the Sammichelese edition is deeply rooted in local folklore and the festive period preceding Lent. Masks, costumes, and collective merriment are the common threads of an event that bridges generations and strengthens the sense of community belonging. It is a perfect opportunity to rediscover the identity of a village in inland Sicily, far from the most beaten tourist paths but rich in history and human warmth.

The Village of San Michele di Ganzaria

San Michele di Ganzaria is a small town on the border between the Provinces of Catania and Caltanissetta, surrounded by a landscape of cultivated hills, pastures, and woods. The village, of ancient origin, houses a small ethnographic museum and boasts deep-rooted religious and popular traditions. Participating in the Sammichelese Carnival means experiencing the authentic Sicily of small towns, where the festival remains a true moment of connection for the entire community.
