About Bread Festival

Every year, on the third weekend of October, Ramacca transforms into the Sicilian capital of bread. The Bread Festival celebrates local loaves made with natural sourdough and baked in traditional wood-fired stone ovens, featuring tastings, live performances, and folklore. The event takes place alongside the traditional October Fair, the historic Madonna delle Grazie Fair, which fills the historic center of the town in the province of Catania, Sicily, with its vibrant stalls.

The Sicilian capital of bread

The Bread Festival is the most cherished event in Ramacca, a town located in the Piana di Catania, in the heart of Sicily. Ramacca has always been linked to grain cultivation, earning it the nickname «Capital of Bread»: here, bread is more than just food; it is a symbol of identity, memory, and rural labor. The festival was created to honor this tradition and draws visitors from across the island every year.

The bread of Ramacca

The absolute star is the local bread, prepared using age-old methods: kneaded with natural sourdough and baked in traditional wood-fired stone ovens. Along the streets of the historic center, you can taste numerous bread-based specialties:

  • warm, crispy, and fragrant freshly baked bread;
  • bread seasoned with oil, salt, anchovies, black olives, and oregano;
  • focaccias, bruschettas, and fried bread;
  • traditional rustic sweet bread.

The October Fair

The Bread Festival runs concurrently with the October Fair, officially known as the Madonna delle Grazie Fair, one of the oldest traditional fairs in the region. For three days, the historic center is filled with colorful stalls: winding from Via Risorgimento through the squares of Margherita, Elena, Carlo Alberto, and Vittorio Emanuele, offering artisanal products, various goods, and gastronomic delicacies. A must-try are the castagne caliate (roasted chestnuts), prepared by expert vendors along the town streets.

Entertainment, culture, and tradition

The program combines taste, knowledge, and fun: musical performances, traditional Sicilian folk dances and songs, conferences, tastings, and guided tours. During the event, you can discover the cultural heritage of Ramacca, including the Museum of Sicilian Musical Bands, the Archaeological Museum, and the Archaeological Park, as well as the local churches. It is an ideal occasion for a weekend filled with traditions, authentic flavors, and family-friendly activities in a perfect autumnal atmosphere.
