About Salt Fest

Salt Fest is a multidisciplinary festival that brings Margherita di Savoia to life every December, set in the heart of Europe's largest salt pans. For one week, this town in the Barletta-Andria-Trani province celebrates salt as the common thread connecting live music, DJ sets, wine masterclasses, children's workshops, cultural talks, guided tours of the salt flats, and tastings of Apulian wines and local delicacies. It is an event that weaves together gastronomy, culture, and local identity, transforming historic squares and palaces into a vibrant trail of flavors, art, and tradition.

The salt festival in Margherita di Savoia

Salt Fest is the cultural and gastronomic highlight that, during the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve, transforms Margherita di Savoia, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, into a vast, open-air stage. Born to celebrate the identity of a community that grew around the most extensive salt pan in Europe, the festival places salt at the heart of every aspect: gastronomic, artistic, musical, and environmental. The event is organized by the Saltfest A.P.S. association, with the patronage of the Puglia Region and the Municipality of Margherita di Savoia.

A journey through music, art, and flavors

For several days, the historic center lights up with concerts, DJ sets, street bands, and roving performances that animate squares and open spaces like Piazza Marconi, Largo Giannone, and Porta Salina. Live music blends with art installations, traveling photography exhibitions, and entertainment designed for all ages, creating a festive atmosphere that keeps residents and visitors engaged until late at night.

The salt pans, the absolute protagonists

The beating heart of the event is the famous Margherita di Savoia salt pans, a destination for guided tours organized in collaboration with local associations such as Pro Loco and Fare Natura. Walks between the basins and the Torrione offer a chance to discover a unique landscape, home to flamingos, pink reflections, and the ancient history of salt extraction—a natural and cultural heritage that the festival helps to showcase and protect.

Gastronomy: wine, salt, and Cipolla Bianca IGP

The Salt Fest culinary trail features dozens of Apulian wine labels from local wineries, alongside specialties like spaghetti all'assassina, bombette, and various street food options, including gluten-free choices. There is no shortage of masterclasses and guided tastings, such as the session dedicated to salt in wine with local sommeliers, and talks exploring the connection between the salt pans and the Cipolla Bianca di Margherita IGP, a local agricultural excellence.

Workshops, talks, and family activities

Ample space is reserved for children and families with creative workshops, such as salt dough modeling and sessions combining art and music. Alongside these, the festival hosts talks and meetings on contemporary themes—from the environment and waste management to innovation and agriculture—blending tradition with a forward-looking perspective, confirming the event's multidisciplinary vocation.

An event that celebrates the territory

Salt Fest has established itself as one of the most distinctive winter events on the northern coast of Puglia, successfully combining tourism promotion, the celebration of local products, and community cohesion in Margherita di Savoia. It is a unique opportunity to experience the salt-mining town in a new light, amidst the glow of Christmas, the aromas of Apulian cuisine, and the timeless charm of its salt pans.

Salt Fest — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Salt Fest in Margherita di Savoia is expected during the usual Christmas period, likely in the week leading up to the end of the year. At the moment, official dates and the program have not yet been announced by the Saltfest A.P.S. association. The event is expected to feature its multidisciplinary formula, including live music, wine and local product tastings, guided tours of the salt pans, workshops, and cultural talks.

Salt Fest 2026 is expected to return to animate Margherita di Savoia, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, during the Christmas season, following the success of previous editions. As of today, however, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the organization. As usual, concerts and DJ sets in the town squares, a gastronomic trail dedicated to Apulian wines and local products, guided tours of the famous salt pans, and activities for children and families are expected. Official information will be published by the Saltfest A.P.S. association in the months leading up to the event.
