Five days in the City of Lovers, featuring a patronal feast, heart-shaped illuminations, and a popular food festival
In the heart of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese, in the province of Salerno, the town of San Valentino Torio is the only place in Campania that bears the name of the patron saint of lovers. Every year in mid-February, this happy coincidence turns into a five-day celebration: the patronal feast of Saint Valentine, Priest and Martyr, merges with the Saint Valentine in Love civil event, which reached its tenth edition in 2026. The result is a religious, socio-cultural, and identity-focused event that attracts worshippers, curious visitors, and couples from all over Campania.
The core of the event is the patronal feast, which begins with the transfer of the statue of Saint Valentine from the Chapel of Piazza Santa Croce to the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore Apostolo through the alleys of the historic center. The most anticipated moment occurs on the opening night, when the procession with the Saint's statue winds through the town and culminates in the enthronement of the statue on a giant heart in Piazza Amendola: an image that has become the visual symbol of the entire festival. The celebrations are organized by the parish together with the festival committee and local volunteer associations.
Surrounding the religious rites, the town dresses up as the City of Love. The historic center is transformed into a scenic route that includes:
It is an itinerary designed to be walked in the evening, between one culinary stop and another: many couples choose this very weekend for a stroll that is different from the usual restaurant-based Valentine's Day.
The culinary trail winds along Viale Unità d'Italia, Piazza Spera, Corso Umberto I, Via degli Innamorati, and Via Matteotti, with stalls open every evening. The signature dish is the purpetta e' pastenaca, a carrot meatball from the local peasant tradition: the star of the Sagra d'a Purpetta e' Pastenaca, which celebrated its 43rd edition in 2026. The festival takes place in Piazza Spera over the weekend and is organized by the Catholic Action of the San Giacomo Maggiore Apostolo parish, which donates the proceeds to charity—a detail that speaks volumes about the community spirit of the event.
Every evening, the squares host folk music groups with traditional songs and dances from Campania, accompanied by roaming performances and DJ sets. There is no shortage of marching bands, fireworks, and, on Sunday morning, the parade of historical flag-wavers and musketeers from Cava de' Tirreni, which brings a touch of historical re-enactment to the town. The local Pro Loco also offers guided tours with stories about local history and traditions.
Saint Valentine in Love is not a festival manufactured for tourism: it is a genuine patronal feast, with its procession and devotion, that has managed to open itself to a broader, contemporary interpretation of the theme of love. Visitors will find a town in inland Campania that tells its story without filters, with completely free admission and the guarantee—confirmed by the organizers—that the program proceeds in all weather conditions.
The 2026 edition, the tenth of the festival, confirmed the formula that made San Valentino Torio the City of Lovers of Campania: five consecutive evenings, from February 11 to 15, with the historic center transformed into an immersive route made of glowing arches, stage sets, romantic murals, and heart-shaped lights.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday, February 11, in Piazza Spera in the presence of religious, civil, and military authorities, followed by the procession with the statue of Saint Valentine and the enthronement of the statue on the giant heart in Piazza Amendola. Over the weekend, the town hosted the 43rd Sagra d'a Purpetta e' Pastenaca, organized by the Catholic Action of the San Giacomo Maggiore Apostolo parish, and on Sunday morning, the parade of historical flag-wavers and musketeers from Cava de' Tirreni. All events were free to attend.
By car: Take the Nocera Inferiore or Sarno exit from the A30 Caserta-Salerno motorway; San Valentino Torio is about 30-40 minutes from Salerno and 40-60 minutes from Naples. During the festival, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is best to park in the peripheral areas and continue on foot.
Reference stations: Sarno and Nocera Inferiore (Trenitalia regional lines and Circumvesuviana), connected to the town by local bus lines.
Access to the route and participation in the shows are free of charge. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls and the festival.
