The patronal feast of Palagiano, blending devotion, the Scamb'scét cavalcade, and vibrant street celebrations.

In Palagiano, a town in the Ionian hinterland of the province of Taranto, the Saint Roch Patronal Feast is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when the entire community gathers in the streets, between the sacred and the profane, in one of the most deep-rooted traditions of Puglia. Saint Roch of Montpellier, venerated as a protector against epidemics and a symbol of charity, is the city's patron saint, and his feast attracts families, emigrants returning for the holidays, and curious visitors from nearby towns every year.
The element that makes the Palagiano festival unique is the Scamb'scét (or Scambisciata), the characteristic cavalcade-procession that accompanies the statue of the Saint through the town streets. It is the most identity-defining and well-attended moment, where popular devotion is expressed with intensity and passion, passed down from generation to generation. Alongside it, the solemn gala procession with the statue of the Saint, the confraternities, civil and military authorities, and the brass band travels through the historic center between two wings of the crowd.
The calendar alternates between religious and civil events. On the liturgical side: Eucharistic celebrations at the Maria SS.ma Annunziata parish, moments of community prayer, and processions. On the civil side, the festival explodes with:
Alongside the religious and evening events, there is the traditional Saint Roch Fair, with stalls, craft markets, and typical products, while the funfair set up in the city provides rides and entertainment for families and children. It is the perfect opportunity to experience Palagiano in its liveliest period, when the town dresses up for the party and the Province of Taranto rediscovers one of its most beloved summer traditions.
Organized by the Patronal Feast Committee in collaboration with the parish and the Municipality of Palagiano, the Saint Roch feast is the glue of an entire community: a mosaic of ancient rites, music, lights, and flavors that, every summer, reaffirms the identity of this corner of Puglia.
The 2026 Saint Roch Patronal Feast in Palagiano is expected, as every year, in the month of August. The precise dates and the detailed program of civil and religious festivities have not yet been announced by the Patronal Feast Committee. We expect the usual schedule, including liturgical celebrations at the Maria SS.ma Annunziata parish, the traditional Scamb'scét cavalcade, the gala procession, brass band concerts, illuminations, fireworks, the fair, and the funfair. This page will be updated as soon as the official program is published.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Palagiano (TA), between the Maria SS.ma Annunziata parish, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, and the main town street. The funfair and the fair are set up in the areas adjacent to the center.
Palagiano is located in the province of Taranto, along the route between Taranto and Massafra. By car, it can be reached via the SS106 Jonica and the SS7. By train, the reference station is Palagiano-Mottola, on the Taranto-Bari line.
The festival revolves around August 16th, the liturgical day of Saint Roch, with civil celebrations concentrated on the following weekend. The exact dates of the current edition are announced by the Patronal Feast Committee in the preceding weeks.
Processions, brass band concerts, square shows, and fireworks are free of charge.
