About San Rocco Palagiano

The Saint Roch Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the summer in Palagiano, in the province of Taranto. Every year, around August 16th and the following weekend, the town honors its patron saint with solemn processions, the traditional Scamb'scét cavalcade, brass band concerts, artistic street illuminations, fireworks, the historic Saint Roch fair, and local Apulian food stalls. For a few days, popular faith and public festivities merge, uniting the entire community and visitors from neighboring towns.

The most awaited festival of the Palagiano summer

In Palagiano, a town in the Ionian hinterland of the province of Taranto, the Saint Roch Patronal Feast is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when the entire community gathers in the streets, between the sacred and the profane, in one of the most deep-rooted traditions of Puglia. Saint Roch of Montpellier, venerated as a protector against epidemics and a symbol of charity, is the city's patron saint, and his feast attracts families, emigrants returning for the holidays, and curious visitors from nearby towns every year.

The Scamb'scét, the heart of the tradition

The element that makes the Palagiano festival unique is the Scamb'scét (or Scambisciata), the characteristic cavalcade-procession that accompanies the statue of the Saint through the town streets. It is the most identity-defining and well-attended moment, where popular devotion is expressed with intensity and passion, passed down from generation to generation. Alongside it, the solemn gala procession with the statue of the Saint, the confraternities, civil and military authorities, and the brass band travels through the historic center between two wings of the crowd.

The program: between faith and public celebration

The calendar alternates between religious and civil events. On the liturgical side: Eucharistic celebrations at the Maria SS.ma Annunziata parish, moments of community prayer, and processions. On the civil side, the festival explodes with:

  • Brass band concerts in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, featuring renowned Apulian touring bands
  • Artistic illuminations lighting up the main street and squares
  • Fireworks displays that close the evenings, lighting up the August sky
  • Musical shows and entertainment in the square
  • Food stalls featuring typical Apulian flavors

The fair and the funfair

Alongside the religious and evening events, there is the traditional Saint Roch Fair, with stalls, craft markets, and typical products, while the funfair set up in the city provides rides and entertainment for families and children. It is the perfect opportunity to experience Palagiano in its liveliest period, when the town dresses up for the party and the Province of Taranto rediscovers one of its most beloved summer traditions.

A community gathering

Organized by the Patronal Feast Committee in collaboration with the parish and the Municipality of Palagiano, the Saint Roch feast is the glue of an entire community: a mosaic of ancient rites, music, lights, and flavors that, every summer, reaffirms the identity of this corner of Puglia.
