The grand late-September festival in the historic heart of Massafra
In Massafra, a town in the Province of Taranto nestled among the Apulian ravines, the end of September marks the most anticipated time of the year: the Patronal Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian, traditionally celebrated from September 25th to 28th, and the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, which concludes the festivities on September 29th. It is an event that unites the entire community and attracts faithful and visitors from neighboring towns, creating an atmosphere of shared participation that can be felt in every alley of the historic center.
The devotion to Cosmas and Damian, the two physician brothers who, according to tradition, treated the sick without asking for payment, is deeply rooted in Massafra. The festivities open with the novena, which precedes the liturgical feast on September 26th, and culminate in the solemn processions of the statues along the city's main streets, accompanied by brass bands. The so-called "scamiciata" (or scambisciata) commemorates, according to popular memory, the events related to the defense of the territory from 16th-century Turkish raids, intertwining faith and historical identity.
On September 29th, the city gathers around Saint Michael the Archangel, with Eucharistic celebrations culminating in a solemn mass. During the service, the symbolic gesture of the offering of oil to fuel the lamp of the Blessed Sacrament is renewed, followed by the procession of the Archangel's statue. It is a rite that testifies to the deep bond between the Massafra community and its warrior patron.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival is a triumph of popular art: monumental illuminations light up Piazza Garibaldi and the old town, brass band gatherings attract prestigious ensembles from all over Apulia, and market stalls enliven the streets. The most spectacular moments are the pyromusical show at the Medieval Castle, with fireworks reflecting off the Norman walls, and the major concerts in Piazza Garibaldi, the city's civic heart dominated by the Clock Tower.
Experiencing the Massafra Patronal Feast means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic traditions of Southern Italy, where liturgical solemnity coexists with street festivities. For those visiting Apulia in late September, it is the perfect opportunity to discover the town of the ravines, its Castle, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Scala, and the warm hospitality of the Taranto community.
The dates for the 2026 edition are confirmed: the Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian is scheduled from September 25th to 28th, 2026, with a novena, the liturgical feast on September 26th, and the traditional processions of the statues; the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is celebrated on September 29th, 2026, with a solemn mass, the oil offering gesture, and the procession of the Archangel.
