Devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary and the Medici Saints, blending faith, illuminations, and tradition
The Ginosa Patronal Feast, in the province of Taranto, is the most anticipated religious and civil event of the year for the community of this town nestled between the Murgia ravines and the Ionian Sea. It celebrates Our Lady of the Rosary, proclaimed patron saint of the city in 1765, alongside the Medici Saints Cosmas and Damian, co-patrons since 1948 and long-standing objects of deep popular devotion throughout Puglia. For a few days, between late September and early October, the historic center of Ginosa transforms into a tapestry of faith, celebration, and tradition.
The liturgical calendar follows a long-established order. On September 26th, the liturgical feast day of the Medici Saints, the statues of the two saints are carried by the confraternity members to the main square, where a solemn mass is held, followed by the evocative ceremony of symbolically handing over the Keys of the City to the Patron Saints. The festivities continue during the first weekend of October: on Friday, the procession of the paintings of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Medici Saints takes place; on Saturday, the procession in honor of the Medici Saints winds through the streets; while the first Sunday of October is dedicated to the solemn procession of the Patroness, Our Lady of the Rosary. The statue parades immediately after the solemn mass, culminating in Piazza Marconi with the prayer of supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival also features a vibrant civil and popular side. The streets of the center are adorned with spectacular illuminations that form arches and domes of light above the processions, while the Bassa Musica Cittร di Ginosa and local bands accompany the parades with marches and traditional southern band music. There are also concerts in the square, shows, craft stalls, and the inevitable local food stands. The most anticipated moment arrives on Sunday evening, when the sky above Ginosa lights up with a grand fireworks display that officially closes the festivities.
The religious festival is accompanied by the historic Our Lady of the Rosary Fair, a market that enlivens the town's streets every year with stalls of street vendors, artisans, and merchants, for which the municipal administration publishes an annual public notice for space allocation. The fair represents a moment of social connection and local economy that has been part of the lives of Ginosa residents for generations.
The Patronal Feast is much more than just an event on the calendar: it is the heart of Ginosa's identity, an occasion when emigrants return home, families reunite, and the community renews its bond with Our Lady of the Rosary and the Medici Saints. Visitors to Ginosa during these days will discover the authentic soul of a Puglian village, steeped in devotion, popular traditions, and hospitality.
The 2026 Ginosa Patronal Feast takes place from September 26th to October 4th. The religious calendar confirms the traditional structure: on September 26th, the liturgical solemnity of the Medici Saints Cosmas and Damian with a solemn mass in the square and the ceremony of handing over the Keys of the City; during the first weekend of October, the processions of the paintings and the Medici Saints; on Sunday, October 4th, the first Sunday of the month, the solemn procession of Our Lady of the Rosary with the supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii in Piazza Marconi. The streets of the center will be lit by illuminations, and the festivities will close with the grand fireworks display.
The complete civil program, including the list of concerts, shows, and schedules, will be announced by the Festival Committee and the Municipality of Ginosa in the weeks preceding the event.
