Devotion, historical pageant, and procession in the heart of Castellammare del Golfo
In the heart of the province of Trapani, overlooking the gulf of the same name, the town of Castellammare del Golfo dedicates one of its most popular events every May to Saint Rita of Cascia, known throughout Sicily as the "saint of impossible cases" and protector of the most difficult causes. The festival, deeply rooted in local popular tradition, combines religious devotion with folklore and pageantry, turning the historic center into an open-air stage.
The most characteristic and anticipated element of the festival is the historical pageant, which travels through the city streets with dozens of participants in handcrafted period costumes. The parade recounts the key stages of Saint Rita's life through a series of living tableaux: her birth and childhood in Roccaporena, her marriage to Paolo Mancini, the tragic murder of her husband, the death of her children, her entry into the Augustinian convent in Cascia, and finally the miracle of the stigmata. The traditional route connects the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie to the parish of Maria SS. Addolorata, where the saint's statue is kept.
Among the most evocative and defining rituals of the festival is the blessing of the roses: on the morning of the day dedicated to the saint, the faithful bring bouquets of roses to the church to be blessed, in memory of the famous miracle of the rose that bloomed in winter. These blessed roses, symbols of popular devotion, then accompany the faithful along Via Segesta and Corso Garibaldi in one of the most cherished images of Sicilian religious life.
The festivities are preceded by a preparatory triduum, three days of reflection dedicated to the themes of forgiveness and reconciliation, which are central to the spirituality of Saint Rita. The culmination is the solemn evening procession of the statue: devotees from the Congregation of Saint Rita, wearing the saint's scapular and reciting the rosary, accompany the statue through the town streets in an atmosphere of intense collective participation.
Alongside the religious moments, the festival also offers opportunities for gathering and entertainment, including concerts, music, and the typical atmosphere of Sicilian patronal feasts, complete with market stalls and a funfair. The Saint Rita Festival thus represents, for the Municipality of Castellammare del Golfo and the entire province of Trapani, an event that weaves together faith, identity, and popular tradition in the heart of western Sicily.
For the 2026 edition, the festivities in honor of Saint Rita in Castellammare del Golfo kicked off on May 17th with the historical pageant and living tableaux dedicated to the saint's life, starting from Piazza Matrice in a route that combined devotion and scenic representation.
From May 19th to 21st, the preparatory triduum took place, with moments of reflection dedicated to forgiveness and reconciliation. On Wednesday, May 20th, the Crash Tuna Band concert was scheduled.
The highlight arrived on May 22nd, with religious celebrations presided over by Bishop Pietro Maria Fragnelli and, in the evening, the traditional procession of the statue through the city streets, amidst blessed roses and prayers.
The festival takes place every year in May, with the liturgical day of Saint Rita set for May 22nd. The historical pageant and the triduum precede the final procession.
