The patronal feast of Lesina, blending faith, tradition, and a sacred procession on the lake
The Saint Primianus Martyr Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for the town of Lesina, a lagoon village overlooking the lake of the same name in northern Apulia, within the province of Foggia and the Gargano National Park. Saint Primianus is the city's primary patron, and his feast draws thousands of faithful each year, many of whom are emigrants returning to their hometown specifically to take part in the celebrations.
According to tradition, Primianus was a 3rd-century Christian martyr from Larino, condemned alongside his brothers Firmianus and Castus during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian around 303 AD. After the Saracen destruction of Larino in 842, the people of Lesina recovered the saints' bodies, sparking a deeply rooted devotion. In the 16th century, the relics were moved to Naples, but on April 27, 2000, after more than four centuries, the relics of the Holy Martyrs Primianus and Firmianus returned to Lesina—an event that further strengthened the community's bond with its patron.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Primianus, which winds through the historic center for over four hours, accompanied by a brass band and thousands of devotees. However, the most unique and characteristic element is the sacred procession on Lake Lesina: the saint's statue is transported aboard a traditional boat for the blessing of the waters, a sacred regatta whose origins are said to date back to a bull by King Ferdinand of Aragon. It is a ritual that speaks to the deep connection between the Lesina community, fishing, and lagoon life.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers spectacular moments: the highly anticipated pyromusical and fireworks displays in Piazza Attilio A. Lombardi, drone light shows in the night sky, brass band concerts, and above all, the grand closing concert in Piazza Umberto I, which has brought major names in Italian music to Lesina over the years. Food stalls featuring local dishes and craft markets round out a program that blends faith, folk tradition, and community celebration.
The 2026 Saint Primianus Martyr Festival enlivened Lesina throughout the month of May with a rich calendar of religious celebrations and entertainment events. The highlight was the concert by singer Gaia in Piazza Umberto I on May 16, followed by an evocative light drone show (pyrodrones) in the night sky of Lesina.
The first solemnity, on April 26, featured the Enthronement Mass in the Mother Church, the procession of the saint's statue through the town streets, and the pyromusical show in Piazza Attilio A. Lombardi. The festival concluded at the end of May with the traditional sacred procession on the waters of Lake Lesina.
Lesina is located in northern Apulia, in the province of Foggia. By car, it is accessible via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale exit) and the SS16 state road. The Lesina railway station is on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line.
Celebrations take place between late April and May, with the peak of the festival in mid-May. The sacred procession on the lake is held at the end of May.
All religious events and square performances are free and open to the public.
