The patronal feast of the Isole Tremiti, featuring a sea procession and Marian devotion during the Ferragosto holiday

The Santa Maria a Mare Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year for the Isole Tremiti, the small archipelago in the Gargano area belonging to the Province of Foggia, in Puglia. Every summer, during the Ferragosto holiday, the community of the islands' only municipality gathers around its patron saint for two days of devotion, tradition, and popular festivities that involve both residents and tourists arriving from Termoli and the Gargano coast.
The heart of the celebration is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Mare, the ancient Benedictine abbey that dominates the island of San Nicola, which was guarded over the centuries by Benedictines, Cistercians, and Lateran Canons. Inside, it houses a precious wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, about one meter tall, of likely Eastern origin, which arrived on the island between the 11th and 12th centuries. It is this image, the object of deep-rooted Marian devotion among the seafaring people of the Adriatic, that is carried in triumph during the feast.
The most evocative moment is the procession: the statue of the Madonna is first led through the streets of the San Nicola village, with the participation of the faithful, and then entrusted to the sea. The sacred image is embarked on a decorated fishing boatโtraditionally chosen by lotโwhich circles the islands followed by a procession of boats of all kinds. It is a rite that intertwines faith and maritime culture, through which the Tremiti fishermen entrust the sea and those who sail it to their protector.
Alongside the religious dimension, the feast retains a strong popular character. During these days, a large blue fish fry is organized in the square, along with the unmissable greasy pole contest and tastings of the archipelago's typical dishes and sweets. The evenings come alive with music, lights, and convivial moments, often concluded by firework displays over the sea that illuminate the cliffs and crystal-clear waters around San Nicola and San Domino.
Devotion to Santa Maria a Mare has its roots in the Middle Ages, when the sanctuary was a destination for pilgrims from all over the Adriatic. The feast of the Assumption, celebrated on August 15th, has kept this tradition alive for centuries, becoming part of the very identity of the Tremiti. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover not only a fascinating event but also one of the most important monastic complexes in Southern Italy.
The event is held on the island of San Nicola, the seat of the Isole Tremiti municipality, reachable by ferries connecting the archipelago to the mainland. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the feast traditionally falls on Ferragosto, but it is advisable to check the program with the municipality and the parish before planning your trip.
