The quinquennial May feast in honor of the patron saint of Salemi

The Saint Nicholas of Bari Festival, known to all as Lu Fistinu, is the most deeply felt religious and popular event in Salemi, an ancient village in the province of Trapani, Sicily, nestled on the hills of the Belice Valley. Unlike the patronal feast on December 6th, which is celebrated annually, the May edition is quinquennial: it takes place every five years on the last Sunday of the month, which is why it is awaited with particular fervor by the Salemi community.
The devotion of the people of Salemi to Saint Nicholas has roots spanning centuries: the Saint has been the patron of the city since the 13th century, and the mother church was dedicated to him in 1341. The May feast in its current form, however, was born from a vow: in 1854, an epidemic struck western Sicily, and the faithful of Salemi invoked the protection of the Saint. As a sign of gratitude, a wooden statue was commissioned in Naples, arriving in the city on December 5, 1855, just in time for the first solemn procession. Since then, the bond between Salemi and its patron is renewed in every celebration.
Lu Fistinu spans several days. On the Sunday preceding the climax, after mass in the Mother Church, the statue of the Saint is carried in procession through the historic center to Piazza Alicia, where theatrical re-enactments of moments from the life of Saint Nicholas and the ancient rite of handing over the city keys take place. In the following days, the statue rests in various city churches, accompanied by the traditional pilgrimage and floral tributes.
For the Municipality of Salemi and for western Sicily, Lu Fistinu is much more than a religious feast: it is a collective gathering that weaves together faith, historical memory, and folklore. The rarity of its five-year cycle makes every edition an exceptional event, capable of drawing back emigrants and visitors alike, passing down the popular traditions of this Trapani town from generation to generation.
The Saint Nicholas of Bari Festival in Salemi, in its solemn May form, takes place every five years: after the 2025 edition, the next quinquennial celebration is expected in 2030. For this reason, no edition of the May Lu Fistinu is scheduled for 2026, and no dates have been announced.
The festivities are concentrated in the historic center of Salemi (TP), with its heart in the Mother Church of Saint Nicholas of Bari and Piazza Alicia.
