The patronal feast of Specchia, blending devotion, brass bands, and illuminations in the heart of Salento
In the heart of lower Salento, amidst centuries-old olive trees and dry-stone walls, the village of Specchia โ recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy โ celebrates its patron, Saint Nicholas Bishop, every year on the second Sunday of May. It is the community's most cherished celebration, an event that unites religious, civic, and popular dimensions, drawing emigrants, families, and visitors from across the Capo di Leuca area.
Saint Nicholas has been the main patron of Specchia since 1897, when Monsignor Luigi Pugliese, then Bishop of Ugento, officially decreed his designation. The date of the feast is no coincidence: it commemorates the translation of the Saint's relics from Myra to Bari, which took place on May 9, 1087. The devotional heart of the cult is the Church of Saint Nicholas, a historic building constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries, characterized by a Byzantine-style apse, which houses the papier-mรขchรฉ statue of the Saint created in 1878.
The most solemn moment is the procession on Saturday evening, which departs from the Mother Church โ the Parish of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary โ following the ritual of handing over the town's keys, placed on the statue by the mayor. The pageant winds through the streets of the center, accompanied by the notes of prestigious brass bands and the participation of civil and military authorities. Upon returning to the church, the faithful receive the blessing with the Sacred Manna of Saint Nicholas, the liquid relic that flows from the Basilica of Bari.
On Sunday morning, the Saint Nicholas Fair takes place, a traditional market dating back to the 18th century that still enlivens the central streets of Specchia today with stalls, local products, and handicrafts. It is one of the most defining features of the festival, a collective ritual that has accompanied devotion to the patron for centuries.
Visiting Specchia during the patronal feast means discovering one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the province of Lecce and all of Puglia: the Risolo Castle, noble palaces, small rock-hewn churches, and the narrow alleys of the historic center provide a natural backdrop for an event that remains deeply authentic, far from mass tourism circuits. An opportunity to experience the truest side of Salento, amidst faith, music, and community.
The 2026 edition confirmed the traditional calendar of the patronal feast of Specchia, spread over two days dedicated to devotion to Saint Nicholas Bishop and popular entertainment in the Salento village. Religious rites at the Mother Church and the Church of Saint Nicholas were accompanied by the procession with institutional authorities, illuminations by the Santoro company, brass band concerts, and the historic Sunday fair.
The central streets were decorated with illuminations by the Santoro Company.
