Mass, bonfire, and food stalls in the Sabina hamlet of Aiello del Sabato
The Saint Modestino Festival in the Sabina hamlet is one of the most cherished winter events in Aiello del Sabato, a town of just over four thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, Campania. Every year, on February 14th, the small community of the hamlet gathers to honor the bishop and martyr recognized by all of Irpinia as its protector, combining religious observance with the convivial spirit that has always defined the village festivals of the Sabato Valley.
Saint Modestino is venerated as a bishop and martyr, and his liturgical feast day falls on February 14th. Devotion to him is deeply rooted in the Avellino area: according to tradition, the relics of the saint and his fellow martyrs were discovered in the 12th century near Mercogliano and brought to Avellino, the city of which Modestino remains the patron saint. From that urban cult, smaller but equally well-attended celebrations radiated to neighboring towns; the one in the Sabina hamlet is one of these, experienced more as a family reunion than a large-scale event.
The most anticipated moment is the lighting of the bonfire. After the 6:00 PM Holy Mass, the community accompanies the blessing and the subsequent lighting of the woodpile: a gesture that goes by many names in Irpinia — focarone, fucarazzo, or simply bonfire — and which marks the winter devotional calendar of these towns, from Saint Anthony Abbot to Saint Sebastian and finally Saint Modestino. The fire rising into the February night is not merely a spectacle: it is a symbol of faith, purification, and sharing, around which different generations of the same village gather.
Once the religious portion concludes, the evening continues in the square with food stalls, music, and wine. This is when the festival shows its most convivial side, with the flavors of Irpinian peasant cuisine served outdoors and conversations lingering late into the night beside the embers. Visitors from outside will find one of the most authentic experiences Irpinia has to offer in winter: no theatricality, just a community gladly opening its table.
Aiello del Sabato is located a few kilometers from the provincial capital Avellino, at an altitude of about 420 meters, along the valley that gives its name to the Sabato River. The municipal territory is dotted with hamlets and districts — including Sabina, Tavernola San Felice, Cellara, and Campomanente — and has built a small reputation in recent years linked to organic farming and valley products. In the Sabina hamlet, you will find the Church of Saint Peter the Apostle, on whose outer facade a headless Roman-era statue is embedded, a testament to the long historical layering of these places; the pastoral care of the hamlet is overseen by the parish of Saint Mary of the Nativity.
Those visiting Irpinia in February can easily combine the Sabina hamlet festival with the celebrations for Saint Modestino in Avellino, which animate the capital on the same date with religious and civic events: two different ways, one urban and one rural, to experience the same devotion.
The 2026 edition of the festival in honor of Saint Modestino in the Sabina hamlet of Aiello del Sabato fell on a Saturday, February 14th, the day the entire Irpinia region celebrates the bishop and martyr venerated as the patron saint of Avellino. The hamlet community prepared in advance, setting up the woodpile and the spaces for the convivial part of the evening.
The program began at 6:00 PM with Holy Mass, followed by the blessing and lighting of the traditional bonfire. It is the gesture that gives the festival its identity: a fire lit on a winter evening as a sign of faith, protection, and belonging, around which families, the elderly, and children of the hamlet gathered.
After the ritual, the festival continued with food stalls, music, and wine, in a simple format that is the hallmark of Irpinian hamlet festivals. Participation was free and open to all, with many visitors arriving from neighboring towns in the province of Avellino.
The program released by the organizers was limited to these events: no names of musical groups or closing times were announced.
The festival is held in the Sabina hamlet of Aiello del Sabato (AV), in Campania. The Holy Mass and the lighting of the bonfire take place in the heart of the hamlet; the food stalls are set up in the adjacent area.
Gathering from 6:00 PM for the Holy Mass; blessing and lighting of the bonfire to follow, with the evening continuing with stalls, music, and wine.
