The patronal feast of the Fonte hamlet, featuring processions, folk music, and fireworks
The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival is the most heartfelt event of the year for the Fonte di Roccadaspide hamlet, located in the municipality of Roccadaspide, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Cilento region of Campania. Every year at dawn on May 8th, the district mobilizes to honor Archangel Michael: after the solemn mass, the statue is carried in procession along the main streets of the hamlet, decorated for the occasion, and the small community comes together for a day that blends liturgy, family memory, and local festivities.
The heart of the festival is the Saint Michael Chapel, which stands solitary on a small hill surrounded by a forest of oak and olive trees, not far from the spring that gives the Fonte locality its name. According to local tradition, a much more famous and renowned sanctuary was once built there: the expression of religious devotion to the Archangel in Fonte is, in fact, older than the ancient chapel itself. Inside, it houses a precious 16th-century polychrome wooden statue of unknown authorship, depicting Saint Michael, which has been restored several times over the years and is carried in procession every May 8th.
The religious calendar is managed by the Saint Joseph Parish and begins several days earlier with the novena: in the days leading up to the festival, the Holy Rosary is recited and mass is celebrated in the late afternoon at 6:00 PM. On May 8th, the day of the Archangel, the morning mass is celebrated, followed by the first procession; in the afternoon, the statue returns to the streets of the hamlet, and the day culminates with the solemn mass concelebrated by local priests.
Alongside the religious aspect, there is a popular civil program set up in front of the chapel and organized by the Saint Michael Festival Committee. The ingredients are always the same, and they are what bring even those who live far away back to Fonte:
All performances take place outdoors and are free to attend: it is a village festival in the truest sense of the word, self-funded by the community.
Roccadaspide is the main town of the Calore Valley, nestled at an altitude of about 354 meters between two small valleys, and dominated by a castle whose construction dates back to 1245 on a pre-existing fortification, commissioned according to tradition by Frederick II of Swabia after the conspiracy of Capaccio. The municipal territory is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park and is famous for the Roccadaspide PGI Chestnut, which fills the woods and tables of the town every autumn. Visiting Fonte on May 8th therefore means discovering a less touristy Campania, made of olive groves, hillside villages, and patronal feasts that are still deeply communal.
Visitors from outside will find an authentic, unfiltered festival: the devotion to Saint Michael can be felt during the novena, while in the evening, the square in front of the chapel fills with families, young people, and those who have returned specifically for May 8th. It is the perfect opportunity to understand how, in the villages of the Cilento interior, the patron saint's feast remains the true New Year of the community: a day when the civil calendar stops and the entire village recognizes itself around its statue and its hill.
In 2026, the Saint Michael the Archangel Festival in Fonte di Roccadaspide returned to its full format, after a 2025 edition dedicated only to prayer. Spiritual preparation began on Sunday, May 3rd, with the morning mass and the start of the novena, which continued every evening at 6:00 PM with the Holy Rosary and the Eucharistic celebration.
Civil celebrations opened on Thursday, May 7th, with the Corrida, the amateur talent show that has been bringing the hamlet's inhabitants to the stage for years, embellished by the presence of singer Gigione and the group Le note che contano led by maestro Giampiero Veneroso.
Friday, May 8th, the day of the Archangel, began with the 9:00 AM mass and the first procession, resumed at 4:30 PM; at 6:00 PM, the solemn mass was concelebrated. In the evening, the square in front of the chapel filled up for the Ibiza Live Time show and, at 11:45 PM, for the fireworks that illuminated the Saint Michael Chapel. All events were free and held outdoors.
All performances took place in front of the Saint Michael Chapel and were free to attend. Organized by the Saint Michael Festival Committee and the Saint Joseph Parish.
The celebrations are held in the Fonte di Roccadaspide hamlet (84069, province of Salerno), around the Saint Michael Chapel and the Saint Joseph parish church. The evening performances are set up in the square in front of the chapel.
By car: from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, take the Battipaglia exit and continue inland along the Calore Valley towards Roccadaspide; the Fonte locality is signposted on the municipal roads connecting the main town to the hamlets. By train: the reference station is Battipaglia, connected to Salerno and Naples, from where you can continue by car or local bus. By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi or Naples Capodichino airports.
All religious celebrations and civil performances are free and held outdoors. The visit to the Saint Michael Chapel is free of charge and has no architectural barriers; for opening hours outside of festival days, you can contact +39 0828 941856.
