The patronal feast of Malfa, in the heart of Salina island, blending faith, tradition, and the night of the shooting stars.

In the heart of the island of Salina, in the Aeolian archipelago (Municipality of Malfa, Province of Messina, Sicily), one of the most beloved patronal feasts of the Aeolian summer is celebrated every year: the Saint Lawrence Festival. The patron saint of Malfa is Saint Lawrence the Martyr, a young Christian burned alive on a gridiron in Rome in 258 AD by order of Emperor Valerian.
Devotion to the saint dates back to around 1100, when refugees from Amalfi arrived in the north of Salina, bringing the effigy of their patron saint with them. From that core of Amalfitan refugees, the village was born, taking the name Malfa from Amalfi itself. A history of roots and sea that still binds the entire community together today.
In Malfa, the Saint Lawrence Festival is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the time of year when families reunite, much like at Christmas. It is so deeply felt that even Malfa emigrants scattered around the world, from Melbourne in Australia to the Americas, return to the island or maintain a deep bond with this event. For many, participating in the saint's procession is a call that cannot be missed.
The festivities traditionally span two days. The eve of August 9th is dedicated to folklore and entertainment, with an evening musical show in the square, singing, and dancing. August 10th, the patron saint's day, opens with a solemn mass in the 18th-century Parish Church of Saint Lawrence, overlooking Piazza San Lorenzo. This is followed by the most emotional moment: the procession with the statue of the saint carried on the shoulders of the faithful through the village streets, accompanied by confraternities, local authorities, the marching band, and a crowd of devotees.
In the evening, the festival concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the Aeolian sea. This is no small detail: August 10th is also the famous night of Saint Lawrence, the night of the shooting stars, and in Malfa, faith, tradition, and the starry sky merge into a unique atmosphere. A popular legend claims that at noon on August 10th, if you dig into the earth, you can find fragments of coal, a symbol of Saint Lawrence's martyrdom on the gridiron.
At the moment, the Parish of Saint Lawrence the Martyr and the Municipality of Malfa have not yet published the official calendar for the 2026 edition of the patronal feast. According to tradition, the festivities are expected to take place around August 9th and 10th, with the usual alternation between religious moments and folklore.
The detailed program (times of celebrations, eve show, procession, and fireworks) will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding the festival. We will update this page as soon as the information is made public.
Malfa is located on the island of Salina, in the Aeolian archipelago. It can be reached by sea via hydrofoils and ferries (Liberty Lines, Siremar) from the ports of Milazzo, Messina, and the other Aeolian islands, disembarking at the docks of Santa Marina Salina or Rinella; from there, continue by bus or taxi to Malfa, in the central-northern part of the island.
The festivities take place in the center of Malfa, around the Parish Church of Saint Lawrence and Piazza San Lorenzo. The festival traditionally falls on the 9th (eve) and 10th (patron saint's day) of August.
August is high season in the Aeolian Islands: book ferries and accommodation in Salina well in advance. Religious celebrations and the procession are free and open to all. Bring some patience for sea travel and, after the fireworks, enjoy the night of Saint Lawrence by looking up at the sky.
