Among the many religious festivals of the Aeolian Islands, the one dedicated to Maria Santissima della Catena in Quattropani holds a special place in the hearts of the locals. Quattropani is a village in the Municipality of Lipari (Province of Messina, Sicily), nestled on the island's northwestern plateau amidst dry-stone walls, vineyards, and a view that embraces the entire Aeolian archipelago. It is here, in a setting of rare beauty, that the community gathers around its sanctuary every year at the beginning of September.
The Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Catena, known as the Old Church, stands on a panoramic plateau overlooking the sea. Its origins date back to the 16th century, and the building was expanded over the centuries until it was officially recognized as a sanctuary in 1969. Inside, it houses an 18th-century painting of the Madonna and Child and a wooden statue, restored in the 2000s, which is carried in procession during the festival. The New Church, the parish of Quattropani, serves as the starting point for the journey to the sanctuary.
The most intense moment of the festivities is the night pilgrimage. On the night between September 7th and 8th, the day of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the faithful from all parts of Lipari set out on foot toward the New Church of Quattropani, where the parish priest welcomes them in prayer. After a short stop, the Lauds are celebrated, and the journey continues toward the Old Church. Upon arrival at the sanctuary's courtyard, as dawn paints the mountains and the sea with light, the first solemn Mass begins, attended by hundreds of people: an experience of faith and landscape that remains etched in the memory of all who take part.
Alongside the liturgical celebrations, the secular festival brings the evenings in Quattropani to life with traditional games for children and teenagers, musical entertainment with local artists and bands, and, as a grand finale, a fireworks show over the sea. It is an occasion where the small community of Quattropani and the inhabitants of the entire island come together, blending the sacred and the profane in one of the most authentic traditions of the Aeolian Islands.
The dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna della Catena Festival in Quattropani have not yet been announced by the parish.
Based on tradition, the festivities take place every year in the first days of September and culminate in the night pilgrimage between September 7th and 8th and the solemn Mass at dawn at the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Catena, followed by the usual evenings of games, musical entertainment, and the final fireworks show. For updated dates and the calendar, it is recommended to check the channels of the Quattropani parish closer to the event.
The festivities are centered in Quattropani, a village in the Municipality of Lipari (Aeolian Islands, Province of Messina), between the New Church (parish) and the Old Church, home to the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Catena.
Lipari can be reached by sea via hydrofoils and ferries from Milazzo (the main hub for the Aeolian Islands), as well as from Messina, Palermo, and Naples, depending on the season. From the port of Lipari, Quattropani can be reached by car or local transport along the road that crosses the island's northern plateau.
The night pilgrimage between September 7th and 8th involves a walk: comfortable shoes, water, and a flashlight are recommended. The Mass at dawn in the sanctuary courtyard is the highlight of the festival.
