The historic seasoned bread festival in Gliaca di Piraino, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sagra du Pani Cunzatu is one of the most deep-rooted gastronomic events on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. It takes place in Gliaca di Piraino, the seaside hamlet of the municipality of Piraino, in the province of Messina, in the heart of the coastline that stretches at the foot of the Nebrodi mountains, looking out towards the Aeolian Islands. For over fifty years, every August, the Piazza Quasimodo in Gliaca transforms into the stage for a popular festival eagerly awaited by both residents and the many tourists who flock to the coast during the summer months.
At the heart of the festival is the pani cunzatu, the "seasoned bread" of the Sicilian peasant tradition: a warm loaf stuffed with simple and generous ingredients. Plenty of extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes, oregano, oil-packed anchovies, and pecorino cheese make up the historic recipe, which is then offered in numerous variations. During the evening, hundreds of portions of freshly seasoned bread are distributed in a convivial atmosphere that captures the true spirit of the event. It is a humble, identity-defining dish, an expression of a Sicily that finds its strength in the simplicity of its ingredients.
The Sagra du Pani Cunzatu is no improvised event: in 2023 it reached its 51st edition, a sign of rare continuity for a village festival. Born from the initiative of the inhabitants of Gliaca and grown over time, it is now organized by the Pro Loco of Piraino in collaboration with the Municipality. For the Piraino community, it represents a "historic" appointment, one of the symbolic moments of the local summer.
In addition to the distribution of the seasoned bread, the evening comes alive with music and entertainment, traditionally concluding with the prize draw (the classic tombola), a consolidated custom that brings the whole hamlet together. The festival is part of the rich Estate Pirainese (Piraino Summer) calendar, consisting of concerts, theatrical performances, and gastronomic events that enliven Piraino and Gliaca throughout the month of August.
Visiting the festival is also an opportunity to discover Piraino, an ancient medieval village dominated by the Torre delle Ciavole and the Torre Saracena, and to enjoy the beaches of Gliaca along the Tyrrhenian coast. Its location, a short distance from Capo d'Orlando, the Nebrodi mountains, and with a view of the Aeolian Islands, makes this August evening an experience that combines taste, tradition, and landscape.
The Sagra du Pani Cunzatu is a historic and recurring event in Gliaca di Piraino, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. As of the writing of this page, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: however, the festival usually takes place in the first half of August, in the evening, in Piazza Quasimodo, with the free distribution of hundreds of portions of bread seasoned in the traditional Sicilian manner.
It is recommended to follow the channels of the Pro Loco of Piraino and the Municipality to find out the final date and the 2026 program, which will be reported here as soon as they are available.
