The sea procession of Lipari in the Aeolian Islands
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna di Porto Salvo Festival is one of the most deeply felt religious observances in Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands, located in the Province of Messina in the heart of Sicily. Celebrated annually on the second Sunday of July, it is rooted in the deep devotion of coastal communities to the Madonna di Porto Salvo, venerated as the patron saint of seafarers along much of the southern Mediterranean coast.
The most characteristic and highly anticipated element is the sea procession. Numerous boats gather in front of the Sottomonastero pier, waiting for the statue of the Madonna to be brought aboard and taken out to sea. The maritime pageant, accompanied by the Lipari Island brass band, sails along the coast to Punta San Francesco, while the faithful on the shore and on the boats salute the passing of the statue. It is a moment of great emotional intensity, where the entire island community gathers around its patron of the sea.
Upon the statue's return, welcomed on the beach in front of the small church, a solemn Eucharistic mass is celebrated. The day concludes with spectacular fireworks that illuminate the harbor and reflect on the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, offering a show that attracts both residents and visitors.
In the days leading up to the procession, Lipari experiences a festive atmosphere. Residents organize musical events and tastings of local products: the stars are the famous Malvasia delle Lipari wine and the archipelago's traditional sweets. A particularly touching tradition is the laying of floating candles in the bay of Marina Lunga in memory of those lost at sea, testifying to the deep bond the Aeolian people have with their waters.
Between faith, maritime identity, and folklore, the Madonna di Porto Salvo Festival is an authentic opportunity to discover the true soul of Lipari and the Aeolian Islands. Those visiting the archipelago in July will find in this celebration a rare blend of popular religiosity, tradition, and scenic beauty.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna di Porto Salvo Festival have not yet been officially announced. As every year, the celebration is expected to take place in Lipari during the month of July, in line with the tradition that places it on the second Sunday of the month. We are awaiting confirmation of the calendar from the Archdiocese of Lipari and the festival committee.
Lipari is accessible by sea via hydrofoils and ferries from Milazzo (the main port connecting to the Aeolian Islands), as well as from Messina, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, and Naples during the summer season. On the island, the festival takes place in the port area, between Marina di Sottomonastero and Punta San Francesco.
The festival is traditionally held on the second Sunday of July. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.
To watch the sea procession, it is best to position yourself along the Sottomonastero waterfront or join from a boat. During the high season, booking accommodation and ferries in advance is highly recommended.
