The patronal feast of the Torrenova marina, blending faith, a sea procession, and major concerts
The Festival of Maria Santissima del Mare is the heart of the summer in Torrenova, a coastal town in the Province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, at the gateway to the Nebrodi district in Sicily. It is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of July in the Marina area, where the community pays homage to the Madonna, venerated as the protector of fishermen and those who live by the sea.
The core of the festival remains deeply devotional. During the festivities, Eucharistic celebrations take place in the Mother Church and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, with a day of prayer preceding the solemnity. The most anticipated moment is the sea procession: the statue of Maria SS. del Mare is carried in a parade through the streets of the Marina and then embarked for the evocative blessing of the waters aboard fishing boats. When sea conditions do not allow it, the statue is still accompanied on foot along the seafront, maintaining the symbolic power of the rite.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival has built a musical identity over the years, with big names from the Italian scene performing for free in Piazza Mare, the space on the seafront that becomes an open-air arena. The evenings conclude with traditional fireworks over the sea, in a festive atmosphere that draws thousands of people from across the Nebrodi district and the nearby province.
The 2026 Festival of Maria Santissima del Mare in Torrenova (Province of Messina) will be held on Sunday, July 26, as part of the usual last Sunday of the month appointment. Alongside religious celebrations and the procession of the statue along the Marina, the municipal administration has announced a high-profile musical lineup.
For the festival evening, Piazza Mare will host two major concerts, part of a summer season aiming to bring artists of national standing to Torrenova.
Religious celebrations in the Mother Church and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, with the traditional procession of the statue along the Marina and the sea procession.
The evening concludes, according to tradition, with fireworks over the sea. Detailed schedules for religious services and concerts will be communicated by the organization in the days leading up to the festival.
Torrenova is located along the Tyrrhenian coast in the Province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exit Sant'Agata di Militello-Torrenova). By train, the reference station is Torrenova-San Marco d'Alunzio on the Tyrrhenian line.
Religious events are held in the Mother Church and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo; concerts, the procession, and fireworks are concentrated in the Marina area and Piazza Mare, on the seafront.
Concerts in Piazza Mare are free to attend. It is recommended to arrive early for the major concert evenings, as they are very crowded.
