A festival of sea and faith in the Nebrodi

The Festival of Maria Santissima del Mare is the heart of the summer in Torrenova, a coastal town in the Province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, at the gateway to the Nebrodi district in Sicily. It is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of July in the Marina area, where the community pays homage to the Madonna, venerated as the protector of fishermen and those who live by the sea.

Religious tradition

The core of the festival remains deeply devotional. During the festivities, Eucharistic celebrations take place in the Mother Church and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, with a day of prayer preceding the solemnity. The most anticipated moment is the sea procession: the statue of Maria SS. del Mare is carried in a parade through the streets of the Marina and then embarked for the evocative blessing of the waters aboard fishing boats. When sea conditions do not allow it, the statue is still accompanied on foot along the seafront, maintaining the symbolic power of the rite.

Music and entertainment in Piazza Mare

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival has built a musical identity over the years, with big names from the Italian scene performing for free in Piazza Mare, the space on the seafront that becomes an open-air arena. The evenings conclude with traditional fireworks over the sea, in a festive atmosphere that draws thousands of people from across the Nebrodi district and the nearby province.
