The patronal feast of Frazzanò, blending faith, ancient rites, and the evocative Scinnuta

In the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, at an altitude of over 500 meters, the village of Frazzanò (Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily) celebrates its patron saint every year with one of the most deeply rooted festivals in the region. The Saint Lawrence Festival, held on August 10th, is more than just a religious anniversary: it is a moment when the entire community gathers around its roots, amidst centuries-old rites, music, and festivities that bring the historic center to life.
Tradition inextricably links Saint Lawrence to the nearby Basilian Monastery of San Filippo di Fragalà, one of the most important religious complexes in the Nebrodi area. The Saint's relics are kept in the Church of Saint Lawrence, while the skull was preserved in a precious bust-shaped reliquary, featuring a silver head and neck with a gilded copper torso, crafted in 1695. The festival commemorates the translation of the relics, and alongside Saint Lawrence, the patron saints Saint Calogero and the Madonna Annunziata are also venerated.
The most evocative moment is the procession of the reliquary, which climbs toward the mountain overlooking the village in the afternoon, stopping at the Fragalà Monastery in a pilgrimage full of meaning. This is accompanied by the Scinnuta, a tradition introduced in 1909: the statue of Saint Lawrence “descends” from the altar of the Mother Church via special tracks to symbolically reunite with his fellow citizens. A spectacular and deeply emotional rite that attracts faithful and visitors every year.
The days of celebration combine the devotional dimension with the popular one: solemn masses, processions, firework displays, and a calendar of side events with music and entertainment for all ages. The patronal feast also represents the climax of the Frazzanò summer, a season that fills the village with concerts, theatrical performances, cabaret, and cultural initiatives.
Visiting Frazzanò during the Saint Lawrence Festival means immersing yourself in the authenticity of a small Nebrodi town, where religious tradition and community identity merge. It is an opportunity to discover the village's historical and artistic heritage, starting with the Fragalà Abbey, and to experience the atmosphere of a Sicilian village festival that remains genuine and participatory.
The program for the 2026 edition of the Saint Lawrence Festival in Frazzanò has not yet been published. According to tradition, the patronal feast is celebrated every year on August 10th, with the procession of the reliquary, the Scinnuta, solemn masses, and fireworks. For official dates and the complete calendar of events, we recommend following the channels of the Municipality of Frazzanò and the festival committee, which publish the program in the weeks leading up to the event.
Frazzanò is located in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the Metropolitan City of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Rocca di Caprileone or Sant'Agata di Militello exit), continuing inland along the provincial roads of the Nebrodi. The nearest train station is Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Tyrrhenian coastal line.
The patronal feast is celebrated on August 10th, with festivities typically spread over the preceding days (procession of the reliquary on August 9th).
Religious celebrations and public square events are free to attend.
As it is a mountain village at over 500 meters above sea level, evenings can be cool: bring a light jacket. Take advantage of your visit to discover the Monastery of San Filippo di Fragalà.
