The re-enactment of the Flight into Egypt in the heart of Siculiana
In the town of Siculiana, in the province of Agrigento (Sicily), the Feast of Saint Joseph is one of the most deeply rooted devotional events in the Sicilian popular calendar. The heart of the celebration is the Tuppuliata (from the Sicilian tuppuliari, to knock), a sacred re-enactment of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt in search of shelter. The festival centers around March 19th, the feast day of the Patriarch, and brings the historic center to life for several days, spanning from the Sanctuary of the SS. Crocifisso to Piazza Umberto I.
Devotion to Saint Joseph in Siculiana dates back to the late 15th century. The Saint is depicted as a reassuring, protective elder holding a white lily, a symbol of purity. The festival, which was a national civil holiday until 1977, retains an intense community dimension here: it is a celebration for the entire village, experienced in homes, streets, and the main square.
The most evocative moment is the Tuppuliata itself: three actors portraying Mary, Joseph, and the Child, accompanied by the local brass band, walk through the town streets knocking on the doors of various inns to ask for hospitality. As in the Gospel story, they are repeatedly turned away, until the performance culminates in Piazza Umberto I with an act of forgiveness: the innkeeper finally recognizes the holiness of the Holy Family and offers them shelter.
During the festival days, it is customary to visit the altars of Saint Joseph, carefully set up in homes and public spaces throughout the town: true works of ephemeral art that celebrate the community's faith and identity. The festival culminates with the Mangiata di li Santi (Feast of the Saints) in Piazza Umberto I, a communal lunch that originated as the fulfillment of vows, featuring the distribution of blessed bread and votive dishes.
Cuisine is an essential part of the ritual. Specialties prepared for the occasion include:
Alongside the religious dimension, the festivities offer musical performances, folk groups, traditional games such as lu joucu di li pignati (the pot game) and the greasy pole, as well as the solemn procession of the Holy Family statue group, which concludes with fireworks. It is a unique opportunity to discover the cultural roots of Siculiana and the entire Agrigento region of Sicily.
The 2026 Tuppuliata of Saint Joseph in Siculiana was held from March 17th to 19th, as announced by the Municipality. As per tradition, the three days alternated between devotional and popular moments: services at the Sanctuary of the SS. Crocifisso, the Tuppuliata re-enactment with the Holy Family actors accompanied by the brass band, visits to the altars of Saint Joseph, and the Mangiata di li Santi in Piazza Umberto I with the distribution of blessed bread and votive dishes.
On March 19th, the feast day of the Patriarch, the celebration culminated with a solemn mass and the procession of the Holy Family statue group through the town streets, ending with fireworks. There was no shortage of musical shows, folk groups, and traditional Siculiana games.
Siculiana is located along the Agrigento coast. By car: SS115 from Agrigento (approx. 20 km) or from Sciacca. By train: Siculiana station on the Agrigento-Trapani line. Nearest airports: Palermo Falcone-Borsellino and Catania Fontanarossa.
