The March 19th fire ritual in Calabritto, blending devotion, zeppole, and folk music
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Saint Joseph's Bonfires are one of the most iconic events in Calabritto, a town in the Province of Avellino, Campania, overlooking the upper Sele Valley at the foot of the Picentini Mountains. Every year, around March 19th, the town literally lights up: piles of wood, vine shoots, and olive branches burn in the streets and neighborhoods, turning the evening into a long, collective celebration.
In the Irpinian peasant culture, lighting the bonfire is not just a spectacle. The fire symbolically burns away the remnants of winter and opens the season for field work: a gesture of good omen, a wish for prosperity for the agricultural year ahead. Added to this is the devotion to Saint Joseph, a figure of humility and dedication to the family, celebrated throughout Italy on March 19th, which also coincides with Father's Day.
The heart of the event is the Church Square, where religious moments dedicated to the Saint and convivial gatherings open to the entire community take place. Tasting points are set up here, and the main bonfire is lit, around which people gather until late in the evening.
However, the tradition is not limited to one place. From the early evening of March 18th, the inhabitants of Calabritto, especially the younger ones, engage in a friendly competition between the districts and neighborhoods: whoever manages to gather the most branches and shoots builds the largest bonfire, and for a few hours, the landscape of the upper Sele Valley is dotted with glowing lights.
Around the fire, devotion meets gastronomy. The absolute stars are the Saint Joseph's zeppoleโfried, soft, and golden, served with sugar or honey: a pastry that marks this day on the calendar throughout Southern Italy. Alongside the zeppole, you will find sandwiches filled with local products and local red wine, while in the neighborhoods, the most rustic tradition of all survives: potatoes cooked under the glowing ashes and eaten hot, standing in front of the flames.
It is in this simple atmosphere that the meaning of the evening is captured: you move from one bonfire to another to greet friends and relatives, stop for a glass of wine, and listen to the musicians. The festival has no audience or spectators; it only has participants.
Calabritto has just over two thousand inhabitants and is one of the easternmost towns in Irpinia, on the border with the province of Salerno and Basilicata. Its territory includes the hamlet of Quaglietta, a medieval village dominated by a castle, and is crossed by roads leading up to the Picentini massif. A mountainous and agricultural context that explains the persistence of rituals linked to the cycle of the seasons.
For those arriving from outside, the Saint Joseph's Bonfires are a non-touristy and very authentic opportunity to get to know inland Irpinia: no stages, no scenery, just a community coming together around a gesture repeated for generations. Those traveling in Campania in search of the most vibrant folk traditions will find an essential and sincere example here.
The event takes place outdoors in the evening: it is advisable to bring warm clothing, because in March, at nearly five hundred meters above sea level, temperatures drop rapidly after sunset. It is good to always maintain a safe distance from the lit piles and follow the organizers' instructions, especially if you are with children.
The festival is organized by the Associazione culturale comitato permanente Calabritto in festa with the involvement of the entire local community and the support of the Municipality of Calabritto. Before traveling, it is advisable to check dates and times with the Municipality or the association's social media channels, as the program may be subject to changes due to weather conditions.
At the moment, no official information has been published regarding the 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph's Bonfires in Calabritto, in the province of Avellino. The recurrence is traditionally set for March 19th, the day dedicated to Saint Joseph, and in previous editions, the first fires were lit as early as the evening of March 18th in the town's districts.
As per custom, the heart of the evening is the Church Square, where religious moments are held and tasting points are set up with zeppole, sandwiches, and local wine, accompanied by folk music and songs. As soon as the organization releases the official calendar, this page will be updated with detailed dates, times, and program.
Those wishing to participate can check for information at the Municipality of Calabritto or follow the channels of the Associazione culturale comitato permanente Calabritto in festa.
Calabritto can be reached by car via the Sele valley floor road; the Contursi Terme exit on the A2 Mediterranean motorway is the most convenient reference point for those coming from Salerno or Basilicata. From Avellino, you arrive via the SS7 Ofantina and the internal roads of upper Irpinia. The nearest train station is Contursi Terme, on the Salerno-Potenza line, from where you must continue by car or bus connections.
The center of the festival is the Church Square (Piazzale della Chiesa), in Via Salvador Allende, 83040 Calabritto (AV). Additional bonfires are lit in the town's neighborhoods and districts.
The event takes place in the evening, usually starting around 7:00 PM on March 19th; the first fires in the districts are lit as early as the evening of March 18th. Participation is free; tastings are offered at the points set up for the occasion.
Dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes, park at the entrance to the town because the center is pedestrianized during the festival, and never get too close to the burning piles. For information: Municipality of Calabritto, tel. +39 0827 52004.
