Devotion to the Patron Saint through the 'Tavole dei Vecchierelli', food festivals, and processions
In the small town of Villalba, nestled among the grain-covered hills of the Caltanissetta province in the agricultural heart of Sicily, the Saint Joseph Festival is the most cherished event of the year. Saint Joseph is the town's Patron Saint, and popular devotion dedicates not one but two celebrations to him: the spring one on March 19th, the canonical date of the feast, and the summer one on the weekend following Ferragosto, linked to the harvest cycle.
The most distinctive rite is the Tavola dei Vecchierelli (in local dialect "tavola dei vicchiariddi"), an ancient tradition rooted in Christian charity. In the past, the women of the village would prepare an abundant meal for the poorest elderly members of the community, who were welcomed and fed in honor of the Holy Family: the number of guests, symbolizing Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, could never be fewer than three. At the center of the table stands the Saint Joseph bread, blessed and distributed to the faithful, a symbol of toil and labor. Even today, this tradition is passed on to the youngest: the "Don Milani" Kindergarten sets up its own Tavola dei Vecchierelli every year, involving students, teachers, and local authorities in an act of transmitting community identity.
Around March 19th, the liturgical feast of Saint Joseph, Villalba experiences religious celebrations in the Mother Church, with the blessing of the tables, solemn masses, and the distribution of blessed bread. The streets of the town center come alive with the sound of bells and the participation of the faithful, in a collected atmosphere that preserves the spiritual value of the anniversary intact.
In the days following August 15th, devotion merges with local rural culture. The summer Saint Joseph festival takes place in conjunction with the Siccagno Tomato Festival and the Villalba Lentil Festival, two events that showcase the territory's signature products. The Siccagno tomato is grown in dry-farming conditions, without irrigation, using traditional techniques that enhance its flavor and concentration; the Villalba lentil, introduced in the 19th century by the Marquis Nicolรฒ Palmeri, is a recognized specialty of the Nisseno gastronomy. Between religious celebrations, the ringing of Saint Joseph's bells, the firing of muskets, the solemn procession of the statue through the city streets, and fireworks, the festival offers the famous mega spaghetti feast with Siccagno tomato and lentil tastings in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, accompanied by music and dancing.
The Saint Joseph Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the glue of a community that recognizes itself in its rural roots and faith. Organized by the Parish with the support of the Municipality of Villalba, the Pro Loco, and volunteers, it attracts both resident and emigrated Villalbesi, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the popular traditions of inland Sicily.
The spring celebration of 2026 saw, on March 18th, the setting up of the traditional Tavola dei Vecchierelli at the "Don Milani" Kindergarten in Villalba, as part of the "Baby Parking" project. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Maria Paola Immordino, Councilor for Education Silvana Calร , School Principal Salvatore Mastrosimone, and Archpriest Father Marko Cosentino, who blessed the table, recalling how bread, the central element of the rite, is a symbol of toil and labor. On March 19th, the liturgical feast of the Patron Saint, religious celebrations took place in the Mother Church. The summer Saint Joseph festival, with the Siccagno Tomato Festival and the Lentil Festival, is expected on the weekend following August 15th, but the 2026 program and dates have not yet been published.
