The Tavulata and votive breads in the heart of the Nisseno region
The Saint Joseph Festival with Tavulata in Bompensiere, in the heart of the Caltanissetta province, is one of the most authentic expressions of Sicilian popular devotion. Every year, around March 19th, this small village in the Nisseno area gathers to honor Saint Joseph, patriarch and protector of the poor, orphans, and unmarried women, with a ritual that weaves together faith, community, and traditional cuisine.
The most anticipated moment is the Tavulata, the large votive table set up in the village square. The celebration reaches its climax when three figures, dressed as Saint Joseph, the Madonna, and the Child Jesus, walk through the village streets to the center, where the banquet awaits them. At the heart of the scene are the votive breads: true masterpieces of handmade craftsmanship that reproduce sacred symbols, flowers, branches, and the carpenter's tools in homage to the saint.
The Tavulata represents a form of ex-voto: a gesture of gratitude linked to the ancient legend that Saint Joseph, invoked by the Sicilian people, saved the island from a severe famine. Today, everyone sits at that table, sharing above all a sense of community belonging.
Alongside the Tavulata, the Rutta di li baccaredde takes place, an ancient local custom, along with the tasting of typical Bompensiere traditional products. The festival's cuisine follows the ritual of frugality: homemade pasta seasoned with legumes like chickpeas and lentils, salt cod, seasonal vegetables, and, to finish, the essential sfince di San Giuseppe.
In the 2026 edition, the traditional festivities were joined by the first edition of the Craft Fair, a new initiative by the municipal administration to promote local artisans and products. A day of stands, music, and performances that enriched the religious festival with a broader dimension, promoting the small Nisseno village.
Visiting Bompensiere during the Saint Joseph Festival means coming into contact with the most genuine side of Sicily, that of small towns where traditions are passed down from generation to generation. Between the votive breads, the procession of the figures, and the flavors of the Tavulata, the festival offers a sincere immersion into the popular culture of the province of Caltanissetta.
The 2026 edition intertwined traditional devotion with a new feature. On March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph, the customary Tavulata was celebrated with votive breads and the procession of the three figures (Saint Joseph, the Madonna, and Jesus) toward the square.
On March 21st, the first edition of the Craft Fair was added, announced by Mayor Salvatore Virciglio as a novelty in the village festivities.
