March 19th in Polizzi Generosa: a blend of faith, processions, and the famous Tavulata dei Virgineddi
On March 19th, the village of Polizzi Generosa, perched at nearly a thousand meters in the heart of the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, comes alive to honor Saint Joseph, the patron saint of workers and fathers. It is a moment of profound spiritual, cultural, and gastronomic significance for the entire community, drawing visitors from neighboring towns and the city of Palermo alike.
The liturgical centerpiece is the solemn mass held at the Church of Maria SS. Assunta, followed by the blessing and distribution of bread to the faithful—an ancient gesture reflecting the generosity and sharing associated with the Saint's cult. In the afternoon, the statue of Saint Joseph with the Baby Jesus, a work attributed to the sculptor Quattrocchi, is carried in procession through the historic center, accompanied by drummers and a brass band that fill the streets with music in an atmosphere of deep spirituality.
The folk heart of the festival is the Tavulata dei Virgineddi, a traditional nine-course banquet of local specialties, originally offered to the poor and now open to the entire community, including the elderly and children. The custom is rooted in Sicily's agricultural past: once, the wealthy would set the table and distribute food to the needy in honor of Saint Joseph, and the first to be served were children who had recently received their First Communion—the "virgineddi" (little virgins) who give the table its name.
The menu showcases the authentic flavors of Madonie cuisine: bread with oranges, tagliatelle with badda beans from Polizzi and wild fennel, fried cardoons and broccoli in batter, and the essential Sfinge di San Giuseppe, a typical pastry topped with honey and cinnamon or filled with ricotta. More than just a meal, the Tavulata is a ritual of sharing that renews the sense of belonging and devotion in Polizzi Generosa every year.
As one of the most characteristic villages in the Madonie, Polizzi Generosa preserves churches, palaces, and traditions that make the Saint Joseph Festival one of the most cherished events on its calendar, alongside the celebrations for the patron saint San Gandolfo and the autumn food festivals.
In 2026, Polizzi Generosa once again renewed its devotion to Saint Joseph on March 19th. The Municipality issued a specific ordinance modifying traffic in the historic center for March 18th and 19th, confirming the schedule of the festivities.
The day followed the traditional pattern: solemn mass at the Church of Maria SS. Assunta, blessing and distribution of bread, an afternoon procession of the Saint's statue accompanied by drummers and a brass band, and the Tavulata dei Virgineddi with its nine courses, ranging from bread with oranges to the Saint Joseph sfinge pastries.
Civil and religious celebrations concentrated between March 18th and 19th.
