A celebration of work and tradition in the heart of Demonte, Stura Valley
In the alpine village of Demonte, nestled along the Stura Valley in the province of Cuneo, the Saint Joseph Festival is one of the most heartfelt spring traditions. Saint Joseph, the patron saint of workers and guardian of the family, is celebrated here with a program that bridges religious observance and popular culture, rooted in the farming and artisan history of this corner of Occitan Piedmont.
The festival is more than just a liturgical event; it is an occasion for the entire community to gather, from the hamlets scattered along the valley to the village center. The central theme is work, viewed as a shared value and a core part of the identity of a mountain territory accustomed to hard work and solidarity.
The program spans several days. It opens with an evening of reflection dedicated to the theme of "Christians at Work," promoted by the diocesan pastoral care for labor and hosted in the parish oratory. This is followed by an evening that combines the recitation of the Rosary in church with a theatrical performance in Piedmontese, a living expression of local culture and the regional language.
The highlight is Sunday, featuring a procession accompanied by a brass band that winds through the village streets, starting from the Via Colle dell'Ortica area. The day continues with Holy Mass and concludes with a community lunch in the parish halls, a moment of celebration and gathering that seals the spirit of the community.
Demonte is a village with ancient origins, once a commercial passage in Roman times and later a military stronghold for the House of Savoy. Today, it is known as the "corner of Provence" of the Stura Valley for the lavender fields that color its meadows between June and July, but it is above all a territory rich in Occitan traditions, patronal festivals, and a strong alpine identity. The Saint Joseph Festival is one of its most authentic expressions: an event where faith meets daily life and the memory of a community that continues to recognize itself in its own rites.
The festival takes place in Demonte (CN), in the Stura Valley, between the oratory and the parish church. The meeting point for the Sunday procession is at Via Colle dell'Ortica 58.
Demonte can be reached from Cuneo by following the SS21 of the Stura Valley towards the Maddalena Pass (approximately 25 km). Traveling by car is the most convenient option; alternatively, there are bus connections from the provincial capital.
Reservations are required for the Sunday community lunch in the parish halls. Sign-ups are collected by local representatives indicated by the parish.
Participation in religious events and performances is free of charge.
