The patriarchal feast of Altofonte: a blend of faith, communal tables, and fireworks at Monte Calvario
The Saint Joseph Festival is one of the most deeply rooted events in the calendar of Altofonte, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. For nearly a week around March 19th, the town experiences a vibrant blend of faith, folk culture, and community participation that brings together families, brotherhoods, and local associations.
The organizational heart of the festival is the Holy Family Congregation, supported by the Santa Maria Parish and the Altofonte Pro Loco, with the backing of the Municipality and the Metropolitan City of Palermo. The bond between Altofonte and Saint Joseph is expressed through the veneration of the Holy Family statue, kept in the Saint Joseph crypt and carried in procession to the Mother Church to mark the start of the celebrations.
Among the most characteristic traditions is the Saint Joseph Table, set up in Piazza Falcone e Borsellino: an ancient rite, widespread throughout Sicily, where a votive table is prepared and blessed bread is distributed to the community as a symbol of sharing and gratitude to the patron saint of families and workers. Alongside the religious observances, there are gastronomic tastings, children's entertainment, and traditional Sicilian puppet theater.
The day of the solemnity, March 19th, begins with the morning alborata (dawn salute) and continues with the Solemn Mass, the music of the "I Venti di Altofonte" brass band, and the grand procession of the Holy Family statue through the town streets. The highlight is the fireworks display at Monte Calvario, which illuminates the Altofonte night and brings the festivities to a close.
The religious dimension is joined by a civic and popular one with the Spring Fair in Piazza Falcone e Borsellino, featuring majorette parades, drummers, a living procession of the Holy Family, and numerous activities for all ages, attracting visitors from neighboring towns in the province of Palermo.
The festivities for Saint Joseph in Altofonte opened on March 10th and concluded on March 19th, 2026, the day of the solemnity, organized by the Santa Maria Parish, the Holy Family Congregation, the Pro Loco, and the Municipality of Altofonte with the Metropolitan City of Palermo.
The program also included gastronomic tastings, traditional Sicilian puppet theater, and children's entertainment.
The festivities traditionally take place in the second half of March, culminating on March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph.
